Hi there,we are new to caravanning.....can any tell me if it is legal to have caravan on the road outside house if it is on tow bar ready for the off the following morning early......

Linda, as long as the combination are not causing an undue obstruction, such as making the passing of traffic very difficult, then it should be ok, but you do need parking lights switched on, on the van as it is classed as a trailer.

In strictness you would probably be contravening a section of the road traffic act or some local byelaw, but in practice you will be gone before anyone can come along to enforce.

It's always a good idea to tell your neighbours that it will only be there overnight.

There are caravans permanently parked on the road scattered around most towns ... they are the ones that enforcement officers should be pursuing.

We met a woman on our last trip, she was from Aberdeen,she kept her caravan on the road outside of her flat because she had nowhere to keep it. She could only get her insurance from the caravan club no one else would touch her.
