Hi all , finally managed to register after a few days of trying, as the title suggests I'm a total novice to caravaning and looking to buy my first one soon .

A few questions if I may ...Budget about £3.5k , looking for a 4 berth in the north east area( SE.Northumberland) , and lastly is a 1.9 deisel vectra powerful enough .

Sorry for the long post , all replies greatly appreciated .

Tony.

We are also in the north east we have just bought our van from Barrons www.caravandeals.co.uk (Burtree Gate (A68)) We spoke with Carlin sales a well clued up caravanner of many years the Accessory shop is comprehensive but at the same time limited. We also looked at Catterick Caravan & Camping Centre www.catterickcaravans.com to compare prices and deals available, there Accessory shop is Vast and keenly priced. Your motor should be fine but the dealer will be able to confirm this on a per van looked at. another option well worth looking at is a 2-3 berth with a awning. Check out both web sites and pay both a visit stock changes each day and prices are somewhat negotiable and some will have some of the extras you will need. our van came with an awning gas bottle and both water containers (Fresh & Grey)

Back again , thanks for the reply , going hunting this weekend!

What's a decent make of caravan? I have seen Bailey and ABI recently , is there anything specific faults I should watch out for on different brands?

Cheers , Tony.

Just had a look round Autotrader for private sales as IMHO you will be pushing it to find a desent van on your current budget from a dealer (But not imposable I also had a look in Barrons today and they had 3 - 4 that would fit your budget, and they also come fully serviced, HPI checked and CHRis checked. Found this one on the trader

COLCHESTER Fleetwood 4 Berth, full

awning, cassette toilet & shower, hot & cold water, excellent condition throughout with brand new tent, bulldog security lock.

Hello Tony, Different versions of the vectra deisel have differnt maximun tow allowances, so do check for your specific model. (1500 to 1600Kg) Your other question regarding a "good Make" of caravan is difficult to answer. Each dealer will extole teh benefits of teh models they are franchised to sell, and end users will will tend to be very polarised infavour of thier own caravan, or regretting its purchase. Regrettably it is down to doing your own research, Read the magazines who are likely to be more objective about the good and the bad points, then take time to view examples.
