We are staying in Torquay in August and are not really keen on the beach there. Can anybody recommend any nice beaches that are not too far away?

Paighton is not too far away, there is a ferry from Torquay over to Brixham, also very good.

My partner is a Devon Dumpling - Bigbury is about 15/18 miles away, (nice there, I can vouch for that!), Blackpool Sands (10,12 miles away and a Blue Flag Beach), Daddyfoot Beach is a bit along (2,3 miles away from Torquay).
He reckons Blackpool Sands is the best, good parking, lovely beach, top quality apparently.

We stayed at the CC site at Hillhead last year, which is near Torquay. We visited Torquay one afternoon and found it tacky, decided not to return! We found a really nice beach further down the coast, about 30-40 mins drive if i remember, called Blackpool Sands.
You do have to pay to access it, but i thought it was well worth it. You pay on arrival to park the car (plenty of spaces, directed by an attendant) i think it was about

I have to say Paignton was awfull very Blackpool like , full of arcades and tacky shops.
The beach was covered in this green smelly slimy stuff and a tractor was clearing it up and this was at mid to late morning. Not an pleasant sight (or smell).
We did go to Blackpool Sands and it was OK plenty of parking , good beach shop and cafe but shingle beach (most are in the area I believe).
Goddrington is also supposed to be OK but we gave it a miss.
For info can recommend the Living Coasts centre , try and aim to be there about 14:30 as they feed the peguins then , they and the sea birds are free to roam the enclosure so you can get very close to the wild life.

Mothercombe Bay near Bigbury is lovely. I was told that it where they filmed the film National Velvet.we stayed at Hillhead a couple of weeks ago which is a really nice site.

I fully agree with the beaches that Valerie mentioned. Bigbury can be a slow journey but well worth it when you get there.Off the bay is Burgh Island with its Art Deco Hotel as seen on some agatha christie type films.You can walk across the sand at low tide, but otherwise you can get the sea tractor across- apparently the only one in the world!
Also the beach at Bantham is lovely.Once you get west of Dartmouth the area seems to be timeless.

Rather than go into the expensive car park at Blackpool Sands and on the shingle beach there is a long stretch of sandy beach which is as nature intended approx. 3 - 4 miles further on. Just for interest there is a WWll American tank in the car park on display. Apparantly they were on manouvres in the area during the war and it got bogged down in the sand. Many years later it was moved, cleaned up and put on display in the car park. There are a few shops in the village but nothing there in wet weather.
just to add to Colins suggestion I think he's referring to Slapton Sands and there are several car parks along the stretch.

Hi, I visit Devon a few times a year because my parents live in Kingswear. Beware of Slapton sands because one end is a nudist beach (which we found out whilst having a B.B.Q and the kids got more than an eye full of the view), but Goodrington sands is a sandy beach very good for sandcastles and the kids. Also Woodlands adventure park in dartmouth is a great day out. There is a butterfly and otter sanctury in buckfastleigh and also buckfast abbey which has lovely stained glass windows, worth a look.
Jackie - you have now let the cat out of the bag - Plotter has these fixations regarding nudist beaches - he keeps on about Studland Beach in Dorset but now he has a choice between Dorset and Devon to satisfy his whims.
