hello

I've read plenty on the x-trail mk2 but even looking thru alot of postings to find what ish mpg peeps are getting when towing but to no avail. i do short distance towing alot ie. 30 miles and also long distance on the continent for annual hols, so 700-1000 miles of motorway is not unusual.

I'm interested in the 173bhp 2 ltr diesel manual, not bothered about which level of speck, as it is used in anumber of trims.

I have the 150 bhp diesel Sport and tow an Ace Award Nightstar(1580Kg max)

I get about 24 mpg towing below legal limits and 35ish around town etc solo

I have fitted M A D spring asssiters as the rear end seemed softer than previous XTs

Are you aware of the Niossan XT spare wheel that is full size emergency use only and not to be used for towing as stated by Nissan

So far in almost 2 years one door lock replaced under warranty and very satisfied(spare wheel excepted)

I get around 33mpg towing 1333kg, with my 171bhp xtrail, about 40mpg on a run, these are the computer readings, a chap posted that the computer was about 2mpg optimistic, but i haven't bothered with a brim to brim check. I am very happy with the fuel consumption, as i was with the old xtrail, with the 2.2 dci i got around 30mpg towing and high 30's solo, checked brim to brim. I don't speed round, obviously the figures will drop if you do. But i find the xtrail promotes a sedate drive, so its not a problem to drive economically.

I have only done 3k over 6 months, and as yet the car has been completely trouble free, which is just as well because my local dealer is useless.

hi alec,

i have the 2ltr 173 bhp 08 plate x trail, tow avondale osprey with it(1450 kgs)and its awsome.had a 3ltr terrano previous and the x trail tows the van much better than the terrano,it just sails up steep inclines.better mpg all round, and a smoother drive.mpg towing averages around 27 mpg,and over 40mpg on a run.only difference i found was the terrano was solid on the road,no wavering with passing lorries, whereas the x trail you get a little but not much.you wont be disappointed.

Like Klarky I've a 173 (171?) X-Trail pulling 1450kg max weight (Bailey Burgundy in my case). I tow on motorways at lorry speed usually - 60mph indicated - and get 22-27mpg depending on wind direction. Baileys are not very aerodynamic!

Solo 43mpg overall, and yes the computer thingy is about 2mpg optimistic when the tyres are newish. Power is quite adequate.

I've not noticed any sway at all when coaches or the odd ungoverned lorry pass. In fact quite a relaxing drive.

No problems in 20,000 miles, fingers crossed...

We have had an 08 (T31) xtrail for about 2 months and have generally been very pleased with it. Over 3 trips we have towed about 1400 miles averaging towing about 27mph (the computer is about 2 mph optimistic) and 27 solo. We find it gives a very comfy ride solo or towing. We have had one problem though, the Diesel particulate filter. To save time I will pase here my query to another forum:-

I bought a one year old, 9.5k miles Xtrail a couple of months ago. I had done about 2k miles including a lot of towing and it performed great, but I then took it recently to the Isle of Mull with the van and the DPF light came on after about 500 miles solo driving on the island, which means you have to drive at 50mph+ until it goes out. Not easy on an Island with mainly single track roads. I did succed in getting it to go out, but it then came back (still on the Island) about 500miles later. again I got it to go out. Do these filters block up more quickly on low speed / power use? I am not happy with this as it seems to prevent me from taking the car to remote areas.

The sting in the tail is that if you can not get the light to go out it goes into limp home mode and you have to go to a Nissan dealer. The nearest one would have been Dumbarton which was 2 ferries and 2 hours drive away. Plus a cost of between

Mazda 6 owners are having a night mare with these dpf filters.

See honest john for a very long thread.

The imfo with my car on delivery was to drive at over 40 mph, not 50mph, but even so it can be a problem?

Cars with dpf are not recommended for short journeys, where the engine does not get to normal temperatures. Something the car makers do not shout about. Its all down to euro6 compliance as i understand.

Bryan

The engine is 171 BHP, or 173 HP, or 173 PS.

Again something car makers keep quite about, as BHP sells cars, Nissan always quote HP values, hence the confusion.

So from two different posts, i have confirmation that the computer reads 2mpg high.

I have just got back from a wet holiday, early due to the poor weather.

On this tour i only got 31mpg towing, so wind this time, so 29mpg.(lots of 5th gear use)

I have just started to notice the rear mirror vibration, what have owners done to reduce it? Chewing gum was mentioned, where do you put it

Also i am getting the odd twitch when white van man flies by, lorries and coaches don't seem to affect it. I am using 85kg nose weight, i did intend to use 90kg, but just couldn't be bothered to add weight, but i will rearrange the loading for next time.

What do other owners load the nose to? I would be grateful for feedback.

You are getting better mpg than me if the computer is only 2 mpg out

I always brim the tan and work out miles into gallons and I get 35mpg on short solo trips and 25mpg on a good day towing within speed limits and always with air con on

I bought a cheap clip on interior mirror that is slightly bigger than the standard one and this can be set so that top LHS is touching the roof trim

Hello

Thank every one for their input. I did compare engines in the Honda crv, Kia sorento, Hyundai sante fe and shogun, but when looking at bhp/emissions the Nissan was on top. besides car tax the x trail gives out 198g/km of dirt for the power and weight of car, whereas my laguna on a 52 1.8 auto does 199g/km. One of the OTHER cars did do it at about 175g/km but the power was 143 ish bhp.

Back to the point I want to make. I would not get a x trail for its looks if I wanted looks I get a audi q7, what has interested me more is the under bonnet, big boot and how it drove.

Have i missed anthing out??????

Hello

By the way I don't tow with the laguna, I use a 15 year old Pajero that has seen better days.

I have been very interested in the Nissan X Trail as a newer tow car but have read so many negative reports on here over the past few weeks that I am now begining to have second thoughts. Therefore are there any similar problems associated with either the Toyota Rav 4 or Suzuki Grand Vitara as an alternative

I thought i had read all the posts, on both the old and new xtrails.

But i cant recall (other than the odd one) many negatives.

Have you any links to them?

The original X Trail was prone to problems with turbo .clutch, electronics timing chain etc

The new model so far seems much more trouble free and did well in What Car reliability survey

I consider mine superb in every way(20000 miles so far)

But then I could be biased

hi

ive had trouble once with the dpf(filter)it came on when i was running round the tiny lanes in dorset,so was in low gear and going very slow.it comes on because the engine isnt runnin hot enough to burn the excess soot created, you then have to drive the car so the engine runs between 4000 and 5000 revs(not 50mph as has been said)so if you put it in a low gear(2nd or 3rd depending where you are at)and run it for a couple of miles, possibly longer or shorter, stop the car, switch it off and then switch it back on,the light should have gone out(it needs to run at a high temperature to burn the sooty deposits off)if it doesnt work run it for a little longer than you did originally___that failing you have to take it back to dealer to get it taken off.its quite safe to drive with it on,so if happens don't worry you can drive it

Thanks, it does seem that they don't like running for long at low speed / power. What I would like to know is if say there is 40% soot in the filter, then you bomb down the motorway, does this 40% say at 40% or will it start to get burnt off. I suppose it depends on how the software code is written. I suspect that it does not get burnt off unles the warning light is on indicating that the engine is in the burn off mode, I gather this modifies the way the engine is fuel to make the exhaust hot. I'm looking for a solution to go to the outer hebrides next year. maybe every few days I would have to go out at night and drive like a rally driver! So much for saving the planet.

Great car in every other way (oh, I'm still looking for a real spare wheel on e bay!).

mine is a 2008 model new shape, the alloy came off a 2007 model,it fits ok but wheel is diferent spoke shape which im not bothered___at least i can tow with it___cant with the crap spare they iclude which is disgusting for the money you pay for car
Thanks, I will try needapart. I have been reluctent to go for and old model wheel (T30) as my dealer says the hub is different, but you and others seem to disprove of that. I don't car about the cosmetics, I just want to get back on the road.

Couple of points:

Rear-view mirror vibration - more of a blur really, and they all do it. I've stopped noticing it (but now I've been reminded...)

Reliability etc - the recent annual Which car reports showed the current X-Trail in a good light. Dealers are average.
