No email

We are with Plusnet and generally are quite happy with the service, but have been experiencing issues with email as their server does not recognise login details. I am not the only Plusnet client with this issue as several or more complaints on their forum. Their email server has been done since about 1am this morning and no sign of progress yet except that they are working on it.

Sadly as this is not the first or second time we have experienced this issue, it is very frustrating and I am now looking at the cost of having a separate POP and SMTP provider providing the cost is within reason. Although I have a Gmail account I am not keen on using it even for private correspondence.

I am wondering what suitable POP & SMTP providers are out there for email only and are preferably are based in the UK rather than the States?

One of my accounts is gmail and can honestly say its never given me a minutes problem. Why arent you keen on using it.

What does POP and SMTP do for your emails? My son swears by Zen for their internet and he has a dedicated email account. Me I use Hotmail for most things, Gmail for more private stuff and Yahoo for a few other bits. But never had any problems with any. At times EE our ISP were a bit iffy but that’s a long time back.

I've been using IONOS for many years. They used to be called 1and1.

For about £28 per year you can have your own domain name and 5 email addresses. Their spam handling is very good.

One issue that many people face is that changing your email address can be a daunting prospect.

Yep that can be a big issue changing email addresses. At the moment having the POP and SMTP login my email is filtered so that I do not get loads of junk mail.

An e-mail stand alone client that is not Google comes under the banners of:-
Hotmail and Outlook which are both Microsoft
Thunderbird which is part of Mozilla
Opera Mail
hMailserver (although I haven't tried this one yet)

All of the above support POP3 (smtp is outgoing for both POP and IMAP)
Note POP3 does not filter spam on its own. If you have that operational then it must be a service provided by PN.
Apologies if I am preaching to the converted, but POP stores mail on your machine depending how you set it up: IMAP is better for multiple use (i.e. phone+desktop+laptop etc) as it copies every event incoming or outgoing to all machines, ergo the info must be stored on the SP's servers.

I have no idea if PN filter Spam as I use "www.Pobox.com" for redirection and I know that they do filter out spam. However I have the basic account and to access or use POP is an additional £20 making it the same as INOS however it means I will have a lot of features that I do not require and will never use. Plus side is that I get to keep my email address.
Just to add I use a Gmail address for some forums and these are also routed to my phone, but not my POP emails and I prefer it that way.

Just seen on a Usenet Group that PN e-mail servers have been down since about midnight - for PN mail you will get 'bad password.' They have theoretically been having some DNS problems over the last few weeks although it is unlikely to be the cause here.

To keep track look at www.downdetector.co.uk and click on the PN icon.
