Hi all i am quite a novice to caravaning, we bought a Compass Rallye GTE 1991 last week and all the lights were working from the battery, i took the battery out to charge it after it was charged i had a problem with getting the connection to work, after playing about with it a little it was fine.

I went up to Scotland over the weekend and on arrival nothing on my zig unit was working, i got a faint red light but when i switched any of the other switch's on it went out...a friend put his generator on and in the front of the caravan theres a box that you alter, theres a switch and the light on this box came on but still nothing in the caravan worked, i did notice that the box in the front of caravan (sorry don't know the name of this box but i think its part of the zig unit) had 2 fuses a 10amp and a 2 amp the cap was missing off the 2 amp and there was a piece of metal pushed into it holding the fuse in place.

I did change all the fuses inside on out side the caravan apart from the 2 amp as the hold where the 2 amp fuse goes fell to peices...hope some one can help me please , what do i need to do.

Hi dee, sorry to hear of your problems.

First thing you need to do is replace the 2amp fuse holder, so that you have a working item, sounds like th previous owner bodged a repair, and very wrongly too!!

After that, its a case of checking all the wiring to ensure all connectors are tight and corrosion free, and making good contact, this is where a multimeter will be absolutely necessary.

You dont say what problem you had reconnecting the battery? presumably you did replace it correctly , and didnt connect the wrong terminals to the wrong cables?

If you are not familiar with electrics, then it is probably a wise idea to find an electrician who can help you sort it out, as some faults can be a nightmare to find if you are not sure what you are doing, and the possibility of doing more damage is very real.

we had a similar prob with our van the fuses were screw in holders on the zig unit and someone had nicked them before we bought it zig didnt sell them anymore and nothing worked without them we got an electrician in and he made it so we could use push in ones it might seem like a big problem but to an electrician or caravan repairer its not
