Here's a strange thing. I have had an increasing 'droning' noise from the rear of my Audi A4 Avant. Working in an industry that uses a lot of bearings and being familiar with the sound of one on its way out, I was convinced it was a noisy bearing, so have booked car in for service and attention to rear bearing. I also decided to swop tyres from front (more worn) to rear to even up the wear and improve traction to the drive wheels. (Not diagonal as they are handed) Now here's the strange bit, the noise has transferred to the front, it is also more obvious as you would expect and becomes annoying after a while, it sounds what driving an army land rover must be like.
What puzzles me is if it is just a characteristic of tread noise at a certain wear point, why did it not occur on the front tyres when they reached the same wear point as the rear ones?
In nearly 50 years of driving I have never come across this before, anyone else experienced this and what was the reason?
