Hi everyone.

Northumberland is one area of the country that we have not visited. We are looking to go for a week in April and would welcome any suggestions. We are members of both clubs, but would be happy with a pleaseant CL/S with hook-up.

Is it nicer to stay in the National Park or more interesting on the coast? Your opinions, good and bad would be welcome.

David, Northumberland is a beautiful county well worth a visit. Many fantastic sights but try to visit Alnwick garden and castle, and the beach and castle at Bamburgh has to be seen. I have used the caravan club sites at Seaview Berwick where you can pitch overlooking the sea, downside is you get some railway noise as the east coast main line passes towards the back of the site, Also stayed at River Breamish near Wooler which is our favourite. Quite and peaceful with views of the Cheviot hills. Also the site is quite central for travelling around the county. Not stayed at the Haven site at Haggerston Castle but I have heard some poor reports regarding this site. Richard S

Hi,

100% agreement with Richard's posting about the area, in June 2003 we had a fantastic week just north of Alnwick - and don't forget Barter Books in the old Alnwick railway station.

We stayed at the Dunstan Hill Camping and Caravan Club site, close to Dunstanborough Castle, about 10 miles north of Alwick. The location was great, the site facilities were so-so - clean and well kept - but basic

Some really pleasant pubs on the coast serving good, local food.

Robert

Hello David

I agree with everything stated so far about Northumberland. Quite roads, lovely people, great beaches but, you have to put up with the downside of the weather. Now I am just trying to protect God's country!

Seriously, you can't go wrong. Have a look on the web via Google at 'South Meadows Caravan site' which is situated just outside the village of Belford. Privately owned, the best we have visited and the facilities are second to none (they equal to anything we have come across on club sites). The site is just a mile off the A1 (no you wouldn't hear the noise of traffic)and Alnwick is 15 miles south / Berwick is 15 miles north. Both A & B having supermarkets. Belford Golf Club is a 10 minute stroll from the site. Bamburgh, delightful, is 6 miles inland (as the crow flies) and it is a wonderful beach. If you have children and/or animals - this is a must.

We are planning another trip to the site this year, hopefully around April/May time.

Went up to Northumberland a few years ago and loved the area.

Area around Wooler in the Cheviot hills is superb for scenery.

Holy Island is worth a visit but watch the tides on the causeway.

Loads of Castles to visit if you like that sort of thing. Only minor irritation was lack of public loos in some towns. For instance Berwick on Tweed only has one in the town as part of the supermarket(tescos?) with a very stern woman policing the door and collecting 20p a time.

Avoid Cresswell Towers site like the plague..... horrible place, like being pitched up on a travellers site.

Hi David,

Just come back from Northumberland, we had 10 days up there in mid Jan, What a Fantastic Place! We stayed at Fowberry farm (cs)which is in shoreston and overlooks seahouses and bamburgh castle. You are only 2-3 mins from the beach.Very nice site and lovely location however facilities are basic, there is a toilet and seperate shower.

You have to go to Cragside house in the cheviot hills its amazing, its under the national trust you wont be dissapointed!

all in all it is an undiscovered part of north east england with the clearest blue waters and very clean beaches.

You will enjoy!

Pete.

Hi David,

Nunnykirk Caravan Club site lies south of Rothbury ( where the National Trust have Cragside House.)

The site is a no facility site, but is a joy to stop there as it is so peaceful. If you are a walker, you have a good choice of walks all round about, and you are also within striking distance of Hadrian's Wall.

We have had 2 holidays recently in Northumberland, staying at the above site and the Club Site at River Breamish. The latter site was recently refurbished and has top class facilities. The Alnwick Garden is a MUST,with a meal in the Tree House....leave most of the day for that visit.

We went last year to Bradford Kalms site, nr Bamburgh, as we were meeting up with tenting friends. Hated it! The washroom facilities were overstretched with predictable results, the ground was difficult to get levelled up on, and the behaviour of two other families and their children and dogs spoilt it for us. After speaking to the manager, he had words with them, and they took the huff, hitched up and left, after sitting drinking for most of the day!

However, the area is beautiful, and there are a couple of nice CL's if you want peace and quiet.

Thank you all for your replies. There is plenty for us to go at.

Nice to see people taking time to offer their advice. It seems a very popular area, so will make sure we book soon.

Thanks again

Dave

Hi there, Don't forget about West Northumberland up the

Tyne Valley, with it's Historical Market town of Hexham and it's Abbey, great river walks in this area, not to mention Hadrians wall with its milecastles and roman forts such as, Corbridge, Chesters, Housesteads etc dotted right thru the Tyne valley with lovely rolling countryside, you have Kielder water with it's Caravan Club site nearby, Alston market town one of the highest towns in England with its narrow gauge railway.... I live in this area and love it, i'm sure you wont be disappointed, north Northumberland is beautiful but west Northumberland also has its beauty and many places of interest. People tend to go to the likes of Bamburgh, Alnwick, Berwick for Holidays but forget to visit the west of the area, it's probably worth combining both areas into one holiday if you can, maybe stay in the north for a few nights then the west for a few nights also, then inbetween these areas you also have the City of Newcastle and the Metro Centre Shopping and leisure complex to visit should this take your fancy. Hope this is of inspiration, Andrew.

I love Bamburgh, theres a lovely CC CL just off the coastal road between Bamburgh and Seahouses, it has shower and a couple (if not more by now) hook ups. They have lovely views over the islands and Bamburgh castle.
