nosewieght

Hi to you all I am just about to buy a bike rack forn my new car and it of the sort that fixes behind the towbar would this effect the nosewieght for hitching up the caravan.

Regards

Mick

Hello Micheal,

If the bake rack takes any support from the hitch or its supporting frame work, then yes it does reduce your available trailer nose load capacity by the weight of the rack and any bicycles on it.

Michael,

Any weight addition forward of the axle centre line will add to your nose weight. Directly over the hitch (which of course it won't be) will add the full additional weight of rack/bike and will progressivley reduce as the load moves further back towards the axle. Weight behind the axle will reduce nose weight. You could calculate approx figures by measuring distance from centre line of axle to centre line of hitch (A)and centre line of rack/bike(as best you can) to hitch (B). Then multiply weight of rack/bike by B divided by A. this will give approx additional nose weight.

Good luck.

Bill you are correct if the bike rack is fitted to the caravan, then simplest way of ensuring everything is right is to actually measure the nose load with stick and scales.

However the way I read Michaels post is the bike rack is on the car not the caravan, and whilst most car bike racks take support from other parts of the body work as well as the hitch, the distribution of the imposed load between body and tow bar will be difficult to calculate or measure. Thus it is sensible/safest to assume the worst case where the total load is carried by the tow bar assembly.

Yes quite right, I must get some lenses for my specs one of the days. Hope the info might be of use to somebody.

you must not exceed you towbar limit, so you need to weight your bikes and rack, detuct this weight from your towbar limit.

What is left is the weight available for the caravan nose weight.

Unless you have a freelander type tow car, with i believe a tow bar limit of 140kg? or very light weight bikes. Then i would advise against it, maybe the car roof may be the better option.

Our bikes go in the van.
