Hi All,

Some great detailed information on this topic, I will have alook at my mcb board and see what it say's. I dont think I will ever plug anything to large amp wise into any of the sockets they will only be used for thing's such as chargers games console or lamps.

Don't forget that the 16A supply is your total, not just the sockets, need to bear this in mind in winter when you are running your heater on electricity. So if your heater is on 2000kw you only really have approx another 2000kw of power available to you. A normal kettle will bring you close to this limit when switched on. Some new caravans have 800W elec rings and 700W microwaves so you may find your tripping your internal MCB's if you don't switch off other appliances.

Regards

Conventional kettles are 2200-3000 watts, thats 10-13 amps.

Microwaves are rated by their output wattage, their energy consumption is roughly double so a 700w-rated microwave may use 6 amps.

We have 4 sockets still with the on off switches conveniently located within the caravan and one on the outside into the awning area. Never found a need for any more.

When we first started looking for our caravan, our friends who coincidently owned an Ace Award Nightstar, warned us to look out for the number of sockets as they found the Ace woefully inadequate. Our Geist has 5 as standard but the dealer fitted us another free of charge for the microwave we had as an optional extra and we paid for an external socket to run things in the awning if required. We're careful not to run too much stuff at once but still have double adaptors in most of the sockets just to avoid constantly swapping plugs around. With 2 adults and 3 kids in the caravan we have several mobile phones, PSPs, DVD players etc to charge up. Know some would leave this stuff at home but with the British weather we aren't taking any chances!

We're just sorting out the van ready to go away in a weeks time, and will be packing;

2 x Laptops,

2 x Internal mains spotlights.

Mains Awning light

2 Mobile Phones

PDA

Electric radiator heater

Fan heater

Caravan kettle

Rechargeable torch

Radio

Electric fan,

Combicool fridge.

No TV, no microwave, and no "built in" electrical services of any sort.

Apart from the heaters, and perhaps the kettle, most of these use very little power. They are mostly left permanently plugged in (if not switched on at the socket) so as to be ready for use.

So, lots of sockets, but generally very little power consumption. All except the awning socket are doubles - in view of the relative costs I can see no point in single sockets whether in a caravan or house, and I am amazed that anybody should fit them.
