"The youngsters of today will get a big enough wake up call when they enter the world of work and have to forego their own pensions so that they can pay for ours, and due to the economic situation and lack of employment"

Err what year is it? oh yes 2013. sorry i thought for a moment i had woken up in 1980 and just left schooling! Imagine at times i am labelled a wet liberal. tebbit didnt he say "get on your bike" a reference to work in the 1930s? which became a slogan in the 80s?
No doubt the main block of workers who retired in the1960s,70s, 80s or whenever also noted the next generation/s was paying for their pensions too so nothing new in what you are saying there.
Maybe gybe was a little too harsh with some of the things he said, but [and i am going to hate myself for saying this] todays kids have never had it so good and indeed so cushy generally. maybe thats the real problem......

I think Tebbit picked up "get on yer bike" from my Ma. No mummy and daddy taxi ferrying around in my youth. I had to get on my bike. School projects and research was a long long cycle ride and hours in very cold breezy local library.
A friends 8 year old granddaughter's class were give a question at school by their head eacher and the little girl got the answer off her mums iphone at the end of the day and proudly told the bemused head at the school gate.
Camping in a tent today you have all the modern fabrics, insulated sleeping bags and a mobile phone to text, call or email mum and dad. A family caravan trip today can include the flat screen TV, a hundred plus TV channels, ipod, pc, ipad, tablet, nintendo, game boy, and a library of books on a Kindle and that's without the warmth of a modern van, the microwave. It'd not exactly like the tin box on wheels of a few years ago windows running with water in the morning.
When we packed up in July for the school holiday we missed most of our friends in the summer, no phones in many houses and maybe a post card from a pal.
JonnyG. You can't go back but todays caravanning and camping isn't exactly tough for todays youth with modern day gizmo's and the standard's we now all expect.
No longer does a travelling youngster just crash with a few beers on a palm covered beach bar in far Goa,. Cross any 3rd world "year out" back packers trail today and you'll find youngsters planning trips and booking on a mobile, notebook or ipad or talking to mum, dad, girlfriend on Skype. Probably asking for a few extra funds to be put in the debit card account.

If this 8 year old kid managed to get any sort of answer of an i-phone then she knows more than I do for a start!
Maybe the travelling youngsters of today ought to pop down to their local telephone box and get in touch with the travel agent (if it's not half day closing or lunch hour) to arrange their journeys in between karate and kick boxing classes while they are busily crashing with a few beers and growing to be six foot thirteen inches tall. While they are about it they might enjoy watching This on their black and white Redifusion television set

Anyone remember Rediffusion cable service with wired remote screwed to the window sill? ------ TV and Radio delivered to the TV in the 60's
5 year old cousin bridesmaid at my daughters wedding last year took a photo of my daughter and I with her dads phone and emailed it to me. She could turn on the TV and DVD player put her Peppa Pig DVD of choice in and play it aged 3. Ipad aged 4 was no problem and she could unlock dads secure login on his phone.
Gap year students don't waste drinking time at travel agents when they can book flights and train and bus travel and accomodation with a phone or notebook/tablet and record their trips. We've travelled throughout Asia using the phone Air Asia app and Booking, com app for hotels. No tickets, they scan the QR code generated on the phone , paid direct from phone and choose seat with leg space for a small extra fee.
It's about time caravan club and camp sites got up to speed with booking and payment technology.

Dad rented our very first colour TV from Vision Hire in 1970 I think. We all contributed to it. A wonderful 21" but it was
COLOUR

I remember coming home to our first colour TV - I was about 4 and recall 'Playschool' being orange! We rented it from Radio Rentals.
On the subject of stroppy teens - my 12 year old daughter fills that space at the moment! She still loves the 'van, but is a grumpy whatsit!

There's money for you, Sir Dustydogs wealthy upbringing comes out

As a student I had a part time job with John Lewis and sold Colour TV's in 1969-71, the first budget colour model I sold was £875. My electrical department manager patted me on the back, more basic wage than he took home in a year for him, his wife and 3 kids! As a part timer I didn't get commision so I put the sale down to him. In return I was able to get away to the tube early on Friday evenings.
