Olympic Torch - will you see it?

The Olympic torch will pass 3 miles from where I work this afternoon at approximately 4.19pm in Stroud. All our primary school children at my school have been given the opportunity to leave early with their parents to view this historical event ... but not us staff! Never mind, watching on the bbc.co.uk/torchrelay webcam which is amazing. Very moving to watch and read little bits about each runner. Tomorrow the torch will be just 3 miles from my home but again, I have to be at work - it's just not fair! However, we do have someone who ran the torch in Bristol this morning visiting our school with his actual olympic torch, complete with tracksuit, in the very near future and we hope to greet him and run with him in an effort to recreate what some of our children will have seen today and give those who have missed it a small idea of what it was like.
If you are lucky enough to see the flame, fair play and I for one am feeling very proud and patriotic watching this ... the good old British public have certainly got behind the Olympics and with this gorgeous weather as well, it is certainly a good day!!!

We are very lucky in that they will be miles away from us and you should be thanking your lucky stars. Kids are grateful to get out of school I guess. Couldn't be bothered to watch someone for carrying a torch for 10 minutes where the money coudl have been spent elsewhere for better causes. Rather watch the washing machine. More interesting. I suppose the Olympic torch in question will end up on eBay being sold for in excess of £100,000! LOL!

For those who want to find out when the Olympic Torch is in their local area Click Here

Of course what the media never mention when they are driving us mad with their over excited prattle about the London Olympics (120 miles from us and of no useful benefit whatsoever) is that this 'mystical' torch bearing relay was invented by none other than Josef Goebells, the Nazi propaganda minister when the games were held in Berlin in 1936.
The Nazis were very keen on symbolism and somehow this bit of nonsense has survived.

I might pop along to see at least a tiny fraction of where my taxes are being wasted if the torch manages to make it through the Black Country without it being stolen for scrap metal

Its supposed to be coming over to the Island via Wightlink one way and Red Funnel back to the mainland, but,,,,,it is not permitted to have naked lights on vehicle carrying ferries, and all LPG cylinders must be turned off,,,,,,,,,,,could be interesting

Our peeps can be taken out to see it but I'm not going to try and push and shove through crowds of people, so they will be collected at normal home time and I'll stay well and truely glued to the house. Hoping to manage to avoid anything to do with the olympics, the money spent will not relate to increase in growth and prosperity in the country and the money would be better spent on something that benefits all the people that are suffering real hardship at the moment. Couldn't Mr Redgrave row it over and back instead??

I managed to avoid the sponsored torch drive past in Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Stroud,Gloucester and Cheltenham,, all places I would normally be this week, and just when I though it was safe,it will be racing to get to Ross on Wye before me on Friday, that's if it doesn't get lost again like it did in Bristol.I thought it would be 1 torch passed on each time, silly me I should have realised that if Coca Cola are involved no marketing/promotion stone will be left undisturbed, for proof look at Will.I.am I would love to hear of a caravan site offering an Olympic Free zone over the next few weeks, there must be other people who couldn't give a toot about the drug fuelled cheats advertisers and sponsors rip off fest,or are we not allowed to say that in this country in case we upset our masters.

The bl**dy thing passes through our village, about 200 yards from my house on Friday, so they have decreed that the road be closed from 12.30 till 5.0pm, which means that I will be a prisoner in my house for 4.5 hours. For what? I've not commited any offence! Bl** dy Olympics!

I am glad to say that the torch relay is not coming anywhere near me, the olympics is an absolute waste of money, but that is just my opinion. Roll on the 13th August.

That looks like a majority of this non scientific sample is against then. As for Emmerson your offence is to not join in the mass hysteria without question. When is some one going to be brave enough in this country to say enough is enough we can't afford and don't need it.
It is not just the Olympics it is everywhere you look, money is wasted and schemes are forced through by self interested groups, that bear no reletion to what normal people are interested in.I could not care less about reforming the House of Lords or gay marriage. I do want older people to be able to live safely with dignity, clean safe streets and good schools,I could not care less whether we have elected mayors or police comissioners, I do want clean reliable public transport, adequate free parking and a recognition that people are able to make decisons for themselves. Then there is the Afghan war, immigration.Europe, single currency, aircraft carriers that won't be available for 4 years and we haven't got planes to fly from them, and I can't forget 'green energy' and climate warming.

I wish the athletes taking part the best of luck and hope that the British team does well, it's the constant hype on tv that gets on my nerves coupled with the fact that in todays economic climate the Olympics is a luxury that we can't afford to host.
The 2004 Olympics doesn't appear to have done the Greek economy much good which is why I dislike the pretence from politicians that hosting the Olympics in London will somehow benefit us all. This much publicised torch relay simply represents more hype to try to convince us that we are all involved. I can't see where we will be better off because London is hosting the Olympics but hey ho, more political untruths, what a surprise

Oh dear I wish I'd kept my mouth shut!
smiley-embarassed.gif
I got caught up in the excitement of it all through the eyes of our primary aged children ... and I do agree it's a huge massive expense at this time of economic strife.

Never wish that you hadn't offered your opinion which you are perfectly entitled to Lisa, it's great that the children were excited about it all, and even though some of us might moan about the cost children shouldn't have to worry about the harsher realties of life.
I'm sure that some forum members would share your enthusiasm and refreshing lack of cynicism, unfortunately the forum demographic is comprised of a majority of grumpy old men like myself which is reflected in some of the opinions expressed here.
Your point of view is as valid and as valuable as anyone elses and long may you continue to share it with us on the forum

Thank you Parksy ... working with 4 - 11 year olds often increases my levels of enthusiasm way above what it should be for a woman of my age ... you should see me when the man in red arrives in school at Christmas

I am not grumpy........got no time for that.
I am not sporty either but I am looking forward to the UK showing the World how the Games should be hosted.
I will go and see the flame pass near to my house and watch some coverage on TV.

Congratulations Gafferbill on your Ruby Wedding ... I shall be celebrating my 4th Wedding Anniversary this year (no idea what that is ... probably Guinness if my OH has his way). I am sad I missed seeing the torch due to having to work but am enjoying watching it on the Torch Relay camera every now and again.

just to cheer you up I had the same thing in my right kenn five years ago. Sadly it took 6 months before it was ok. In fact at one stage I thought I could be in for a whole knee replacement.

I had loads of physio, well they make you do all these exercises. They introduced me to the micro doctor / vet. 4 weeks later it was fixed!

It arrives in a large park a few hundred yards from my house, towards the end of June. Won't be able to get home; roads will be closed, cars parked everywhere. But there are plenty of people getting enjoyment out of it, and some inspiring stories. So I wish them well, but I won't be going to watch.

I thought the torch bearers had been selected because they had done something outstanding for their community, or something like that, and were locally something "special" for whatever reason.

If that was supposed to be the case, can anyone explain why Will I Am was the torch bearer through Taunton???????????? (and he couldnt even say "Taunton", he kept saying "Tauton".
1. He is American
2. What "Special" thing has he done for Taunton?
3. Since when has America been "Local"?

Yesterday Sam Hutt an up and coming tennis star carried one of the 8000 torches around our local fayre with our MP James Grey. A very attractive piece of metal and much lighter than I thought. Yes I held it

.
Any man who saw the photos of our Volleyball team outside Westminster will definitely be watching some of the Olympics

Sir Sproket CJ (BAR)
The pads are reusable. I found they last at least twenty applications and even afterwards sticky plaster holds them on. They send micro "nano" pulses of electrical current through the damaged tissue and accelerate the repair time. It certainly worked for me so in the end I bought one from the UK expert although it is licenced as "Microvet" . Before the Physio introduced me to the Microvet I honestly thought I'd end up having a whole knee replacement! I can now run and flex the joint as normal. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, at the moment I have dug my Knee Brace out & put that on to stop any twisting, when I go & see the Physio / Surgeon I will ask their advice.....
