Without actually hearing the noise its not possible to say whether its normal or not, BUT you have purchased a A Shurflow pump which uses a reciprocating diaphragm, and they do produce some noise. Its unavoidable. Taking the measure you have described is usually enough to make it tolerable. If you want virtual silence then you will need to use a submersible pump that drops into the external aqua roll, and fit a pressure switch inside the caravan.

I did discuss this with a mobile engineer as we had the same problem. he said his customers had tried carpet and other soft items but nothing worked. In the end we accepted it runs for short bursts only and we would live with it. It has one major advantage over drop ion ones as no one can steal it which we know is at best far worse.

There are numerous complaints about these pumps, mainly via Swift. On our 2010 model, now gone thankfully, we had occasional complaints if we used the pump at night. Had it checked by three different service centres and approached Swift under warranty. The response I got from Swift was basically that

"Yes, the pumps are noisier than external ones, but we do not consider it to be a fault. They then suggested loads of ways for us to remedy the pump noise and vibration, but my response was that it was their responsibilit as the van was under warranty. None of us had any joy on that one.

Hello Thingy,
We all use certain items that do make an inherent noise, (lawnmowers, shavers, drills, cars, radios) and it has become accepted that such things do produce some noise, its up to us to use them considerately responsibly.

The pump functions, and it produces some noise, but its not at a dangerous level, and its usually not active for very long. These pumps are generally very reliable, and because they use positive displacement, they are able to suck up water from a low level without being primed. That can be an essential feature with some caravans that have integral tanks.

I am not surprised that Swift didn't play ball on that one. as the pump is functioning within normal operating parameters. Its not faulty or out of character with similar pumps. It is a standard fit. they have no reason to take any action under their manufactures guarantee.

If you believe your pump is faulty by design, materials or manufacture, or is not of merchantable quality, or is not fit for purpose, then your recourse is against the seller (Not the manufacture) using the Sale of Goods Act.

Don't forget that when you purchased your caravan you agreed to its specification when you signed the order form. The type of pump fitted would form part of that specification, and providing it does what its says, its not faulty.

Abdolutely and I dont dispute any of that. What I do believe is that there is a vast difference in the acoustics from pump to pump, my mate has one that was much quieter than ours, and I have heard some much much louder.. Swift had obvioulsy been aware of it as they were distrubuting extra rubber feet for them My feelings are that if we as caravanners could hear the thing and be concerned about it, and Swift accept that they are noisy enough to require extra feet, how did they miss this at testing stage?

Im not Swift bashing here, other manufacturers also use the same pump, but it has generated a large number of queries/complaints, well documented on all the forums. My reason for answering this was to say that its probably not the OP's pump per se, just that these pumps are much noisier than external ones.

Our on board Sure flow is not intrusive but you can hear it.
The pressure delivery is far better than an external submersible.
Have you considered adding sound insulation to the nearby panels.?
Make sure you don't block any air vents or wrap the pump itself.

Hi Colomcc,
There is a potential for any reciprocating mechanism to create noise.
In this case I wonder if you could try restricting the flow somewhat to slow down the speed at which the pump internals move to see if this has an effect on the noise. However I suspect that to make the pump quiet the flow would become too slow. Are there not other quieter pumps availabe without having to go to a submersible?
Rgds
