Yep - totally nothing to do with caravans - but wanted to share it with you - before it got me.

I cannot confirm whether this works or not but my 90 year old mother puts a conker in the corners of each room to keep out spiders. She says it does work and talking about this recently to a site warden, when he spotted me picking up conkers on site, he also swore by it saying he even had them on the floor of his caravan. He is no longer bothered by spiders.
I posted some to my mother because hers were last years. Soon I'm to buy a new garden shed and I shall put conkers on the floor to test this but being a sceptic I'm not expecting too much

BTW I picked up a carrier bag full of conkers. Anyone want to buy some at £1 each

I also must add that I like spiders and would never knowingly harm one. Just think of how many houseflies, bluebottles etc. there would be without them. Give me spiders any day rather than flies who have been crawling over and ingesting different animal faeces before landing on your food where they then vomit to help break your food down to help digestion

Below is a pic I took some years ago in the shed. Isn't she beautiful

Naw - I slept like a log - but the "other half" tossed n turned all night about it - bonus is that once we'd shown the pic to the kids - they wont come near our room. Ah... no more kids jumping on me when I'm in the land of nod!!!

As for the time of the post - I was up at 4am - as normal, so it wasn't out of the ordinary.

Hi to all of you Arachnid "Appreciation Club" Members, Oh & CaravanTalk members as well. I was self employed (upholsterer/soft furnishings) and worked from home for many years from my Very Large Timber Workshop. I had a regular Army of Spiders and often saw newly born/hatched in there droves, I was never troubled with flies, moths etc because of my appreciation of these interesting creatures;live & let live. I would often watch the rapid response towards a helpless victim when the web vibrated during a short-live panic attack to get free.
I had one very large spider (span of legs would have been approx 2.75"/70mm)that was Baptised Henry, it could have been a Henrietta but I couldn't ID it. I had seen it around during the early Spring. I caught it and marked its back with a tiny spot of Tipp-Ex. It was around for a very long time and then it failed to show-up. I still have a few in the now redundant workshop,I'm retired and the house & workshop are on the market.

It could be still around TR in it's new clothes. I believe that spiders shed their skins

I am petrified of spiders, can't stand them. When I was a young kid, my bedroom celling had a hatch to get into the attic. My two older sisters used to frighten me by saying the spiders will come in the night and eat me LOL not funny at the time. Ever since I have been petrified of them.

Every September, in our present house for about 4 weeks, we get massive ones walking around the walls in the living room, hall way, landing, Don't know where they come from but wish they would stay away LOL. One year we even had the man from the council in to set off some smoke bombs (fumicide I think) as we had so many, that seemed to do the job for a couple of years and this year only saw five of them.

So anybody that likes spiders can come and have mine any time they like.

I remember a few years ago when I had to go and photograph (Press Photographer) a young girl who had so many taranchulas she was looking for homes for them, I asked her to hold one and put my long lens on the camera so that I was not to close. It started to move and drooped on the floor and started walking towards me, I was off in a flash up her stairs. LOL

This was on my downstairs loo wall. SWMBO insisted I escort if off the premises. I won't kill spiders as I would rather have them in the house than flies.

I even feed our outdoor spiders
smiley-smile.gif

This time of year when the craneflies (daddylonglegs) are about I put them in the spiders webs. I'd rather the spiders have a feast than the craneflies lay more eggs in my lawn to kill the grass (leatherjackets).
It's bad enough with the dog(*****) killing the grass with her piddle but thankfully there's no spider with a strong enough web to put her in

It's a pain in the derriere though having to follow her around with a watering can

Talking about spiders one evening while enjoying a glass or two in our awning, we commented on how big the one was that had taken over the area where the spotlight hit the van, and the others appeared smaller. We had a two birth older van at the time, and the kids slept in the awning annex, so the van door was always open. During the night my hubby had to make a trip to the toilet block. When going out the door, I heared a muffled scream. The spider had decided to move, and had built a large web accross the door!!!!! I think it was attracted by the awning light we had left on for the kids. Needless to say, the light was switched off every night after that, and the kids loved their new torches provided by Dad !!! lol

I tried this this year as there were lots of conckers. Went into the dining room and found a big spider resting on the conker - say no more!
