Hi All,
I don't own a caravan, and have never owned or towed one, I've used static caravans in the past, but have been a motor caravan owner, although there's been a break of at least 19 years in ownership, I've had two motor caravans previously, a 1971 VW 1600 Early Bay T2a Devon Conversion between 1990-1992, and a Mk1 2.0 V4 Ford Transit Landliner, which I had between 1993-1994.
I was an Ambulance Paramedic, and also serving in the Territorial Army, so apart from driving ambulances for Shropshire, I also drove V8 Forward Control 101 Land Rover Ambulances as well as various other Land Rovers with Trailers, and Land Rover Ambulances for the RAMC, including a V8 Range Rover Ambulance for Shropshire. I also had a LGV Class 2 and drove various 4x4 Trucks for the Army, usually with LGV Trailers.
I've also owned Sailing Dinghy's before now, so have towed boat trailers behind cars until around 1990, and most recently have towed trailers for the Scout Movement behind a V8 Land Rover Discovery I used to own, I sold that vehicle about 5 years ago, and really miss the towing capability.
I left the TAVR in 1992, and retired from the Ambulance Service on Medical Grounds in 1997 following a Motorcycle Accident, and have been on crutches ever since.
I do have three old aircooled Volkswagens, a 1976 Type 2b Campervan which I've mentioned elsewhere on Vintage Towing, a 1973 Type 3 1600A Variant, and a 1973 Type 4 412LS Variant, all of which I've sourced original Tow Bars for, and plan to get these fitted.
I've recently bought a small camping/general purpose trailer, a 77kg/400kg Maypole MP712, for £100, which I thought was a bargain, and am considering the purchase of an Eriba Puck.
It seems the Type 3 won't be able to tow a 536kg/700kg Eriba, as its limited to 651kg towing capacity, and above 465kg it needs a braked trailer. So if I want to take that to a show, I may also need a trailer tent, best not mention that to the wife...yet.
