Just got home from a few days away and have slunk into the armchair to cogitate.. Instead of feeling relaxed and chilled there is only one way to describe how I'm feeling and thats fleeced! I'm wondering, is it me being a miserable old b***** or do I have just cause to moan?
We were attracted to a CL which we thought was on the dear side at £15 per night, but it sounded nice and was described as two acres available to caravans - it transpired to measure 90 metres X 28 metres and had 10 electric hook ups. The owner was not ashamed to boast that he regularly has 8 vans on there as "he doesn't like to let people down". Last evening we returned back to base to find six caravans and a tent with more expected for the bank holiday weekend! Feeling somewhat hemmed in we decided to pack up and leave early as this was the final straw.
Now, I don't think I'm being unreasonable to expect, even on a CL, that if chickens, geese and guinea fowl are roaming free on site it should be made very clear to me that this is the case. When we first arrived after a long drive we both nodded off after setting up, only to be awoken by a scratching noise from a chicken in the van as we had left the door open! As soon as we stepped outside they surrounded us looking for food and sat clucking around our feet. In the end we found a large twig from a tree and sat trying to ward them away to no avail. We gave up and went indoors. On the second day the door was only open a couple of minutes whilst I went to the car and another chicken came in, hopped onto the bench seat and in an effort to escape banged itself up the window - the dust from its feathers had to be seen to be believed.
More to the point the mess they left on the grass was a nightmare and one had to try and negotiate every step so as not to walk it back in the van. Luckily we did not have an awning!
I cannot believe that the Caravan Club has sanctioned a site where the fresh water tap and CDP are no more than 3-4ft apart. Surely there should be some ruling about this? The CDP was literally a manhole cover with a tap (no pipe) next to it and the fresh water tap was next to it in a dirty butler sink. Without putting too finer point on it whilst filling my aquaroll, my neighbour arrived to empty her toilet which was more than disconcerting.
It seems, like everything else in society, the Club standards are in decline. Do they do unannounced visits to CL's? Do they visit at all??
