We are looking for a campsite to stay overnight, having got off an evening ferry, in or very near to Caen.

If anyone can give us some ideas, we'd appreciate it.

We did an overnight stop here - and they do deal with late arrivals and early departures. http://www.campinghautescoutures.com/

I can't remember much about the site facilities - so that suggests everything was fine, as 'horror stories' tend to stick in your memory. There's also a site almost as you come out of the dock - Les Pommiers - at a roundabout if my memory serves me correctly - which our friends used, but said it was quite basic and 'had seen better days'.

Camping Hautes Coutures used to be (still is?) associated with Brittany Ferries. We have used this site frequently in the past and found that they stayed open until the last ferry had arrived in port in the late evening. A good site for an overnight halt, or longer. As Val A has suggested Camping Le Pommiers, which is much nearer the port, is a bit tired. We stayed there in Mar homeward bound from Spain and whilst it was OK for an overnighter then, I would hesitate to use it in high season.

I have used Les Hautes Coutures several times either coming off the late ferry from Portsmouth or as a stop over before boarding the early morning ferry for home. It is a good enough site and conveniently situated. When making my booking plans for this summer's trip to France I mentioned this site to the Select Site's rep on the phone just in passing conversation and was told that it no longer takes one night bookings. Seems strange as anytime I visited they seemed to be getting good trade from "one nighters".

If anyone is thinking about using this site it might be worth checking the truth of this.

Have stayed here many times but found this year that they no longer accept Camping Cheques or Select Sites vouchers. Cannot comment on their one nighter policy now, but paying directly for one night was very expensive in the past, hence the desire to use cheques!!
