Dover as a Port is so tight for space that there is nowhere for overnight parking. I have heard of people using Marine Parade in Dover but no idea what the access is like. The CC site at Black Horse Farm is geared up for early departures but there could be difficulties if you intend to arrive at the site after 20.00pm but it might be worth a phone call to see if the rules have changed.

There is a parking area with a limited amount of space near the seafront - see http://www.dover.gov.uk/parking/general_information/caravan_parking.aspx. The parking meters only operate from 09:00 - 18:00, so you can park for free outside these times. We've never done it - prefer Black Horse CC site, but friends have and said it was OK.

Hi Fiona - get an earlier ferry (ferry operators will often put you on the next one after you arrive)- have a mini-sleep on the ferry and then on the other side at Calais there is plenty of parking space to stay for the remainder of the night - lots of people do and even showers are provided.

Yes you can stay on Marine Drive and it's very quiet. I've done it when I needed to catch a 6am sailing however, since we live only 70 miles from Dover, I prefer to have an early night then leave a couple of hours before sailing time. If you decide to use Marine Drive try to park at the far end near to the hotel which is open all night.

But even better, do as Val says and try for a late evening ferry and stay on Calais dockside. If you feel like driving 60 miles before sleeping, Baie du Somme services is very good.

Don't arrive early for your ferry like we did last year, as we were turned away with the caravan in tow and told to come back 2 hours later - where do you go? We ended up in a layby on the side of the road for a couple of hours,(with 2 kids and the dog in the back!) as there was nowhere to park the van, which was a nightmare, with lorries zooming past every couple of minutes. Not a good start to our holiday. We had hoped to catch an earlier ferry, have a nap, and set of early on our drive, don't risk it, as if you can't find a parking space with the van, it's not much fun!! We have booked a cl near to dover this year, and plan to get a few hours sleep there and break up the journey that way. It is only costing us
