We are travelling to Italy and are looking at campsites in Italy and France for overnight stops at campsites on our route. This is the first time we will be needing overnight stops and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if we needed to book in advance for these stops? In our pre-caravan days I once booked overnight stops in hotels, but when we arrived they denied all knowledge of our booking - and spoke no English!!

I have never booked in advance because I hate to be tied down but one's luck depends a bit on when you are travelling (both date and time). August in France and Italy is a bit more difficult in the holiday areas but I have found that so long as you arrive at a site by about 4 or 5pm it usually works out OK. Occasionally, I've had to drive on to the next one but in the end I've always found somewhere to stay for the night.

I agree.

Thanks very much. The trouble with me is that I'm a born pessimist and am convinced on the days we will be travelling all sites will be full well before we arrive. Travelling in a party of 7, sleeping in a fully loaded car/caravan doesn't really appeal. The problem of course of booking in advance means that if a site doesn't accept cards paying by International Money Order would probably cost more than the cost of the pitch!!

Hi Anita

We were planning a route to Provence for next year and there is a les castels site called Le Chateaux L'Eperviere in Burgundy some way north of Lyon, this one was recommended for stop over, a useful distance for us anyway, although with the evening wine tastings we could be persuaded to stay longer:) I noticed that you can book through the caravan club booking service although I haven't done it as yet. It may be the same for all? castel sites?

Helen
