For the customers it would be great to have a facility like that offered by Jet2 - Low Fare Finder - where you put in approximate dates of travel (give or take a specified number of days) and it displays all the relevant flights, and prices. If the ferry companies did this it would make selecting a date and time so much easier. However I suppose it would bring in less profit and that's why they don't offer it. Having said that, prices do seem to be relatively cheaper now, than when we first started camping back in 1980.

Have you tried compare ferry prices at http://www.aferry.co.uk/gwmapcompareUK.htm?gclid=CL-Kk8mWg4gCFUwkMAodtSK5ag.

This searches a few ferries at the same time, and comes up with the best prices.

Scotch Lad,

Re tunnel prices, if tou're willing to travell through the tunell from 10pm to 1 am out bound & from 10pm to 4am inbound (local times) you can get some really good deals.

This years return trip through the tunnel (September, car & van)

I e mailed P&O to find out what would be the cost of changing a return trip. I have booked now, but of course things can change and I wished to know the consequences.

Here is the reply from P&O.

Thank you for your recent communication with this office. Our fares are

calculated according to seasonal tariffs and availability and as such the

date and time of crossing is very important in calculating the final cost.

We have introduced a statutory 10.00 amendment fee and further payment may

be required to cover the difference in cost between the original sailing

booked and the crossing undertaken.

Our pricing policy has recently been changed in line with those of many low

cost airlines. The lowest fares are now made available to those customers

booking furthest in advance and at times when demand is traditionally low.

As a result the closer to your sailing date and time an amendment is made,

the higher the cost will be of that crossing.

If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us

by fax on 08707 625425, or by e-mail at the following address:

customer.services@poferries.com

Basically book ahead to get a cheaper fare, and the crossing you want, but if you need to change dates made possibly a year in advance, be prepared to pay heavily.

Hi,

I had another good look around at all of the websites for competitive fares.

Ended up doing the same as Scotch Lad and booked P&O Hull - Zeebrugge going out in mid August & returning mid Sept including all meals for 476 pounds.

Quite happy with that as I only live 30 mins away from the port. This makes it a good deal for us Northeners compared with Norfolk Lines fares for next year and the convenience is worth the extra money compared with Dover Calais.

Hello Dave, Like you we are looking at Hull-Zeebrugge for next summer, we are only 20 mins from the Port. We have used Dover for the last few years because of the price difference, and have to say really enjoyed travelling with Norfolkline, but we now have a good number of Tesco Clubcard vouchers to make a real dent in the fare from Hull

Sounds like the Hull-Zeebrugge route is going to be crowded next year. See you all in the bar. Won't miss the grind around London on the M25

Hi Scotch Lad

I agree 6am is still sleep time for us - we usually go for 10am boat after overnight stay near Dover.

However if you look at Richard W original post he was leaving at 5 am so I was giving him another hour in the 'sack'. He may want an early start in France if he is facing a long drive 'South'.

Point taken, although I don't know if I would feel an early start and a long drive is a good combination, unless there are 2 drivers. I don't think I could do it anymore. Like you we used the 10 am ferry this year after staying at the CC site in Hythe. Hit France about 1 pm and arrived at Abbeville about 4 pm. That was enough for one day for me, and my wife does 50% of the driving. Usually takes me 4 days to get to the Dordogne, but I am looking at the scenery as I go. I think that if I only had 2 weeks then I would probably go for a package and fly to save time.
