Paint seal?

Ok a question to anyone who has bought a new caravan or had this treatment done to their existing caravan.

We have just bought a new van and have been asked if we want this treatment doing to our van. The company paintseal direct say the van is treated inside and out with a Teflon based product. It stops the interior from getting stained and the sample peice of seat they used did look quite impressive as the Coke they poured onto the two halves did just run off the treated side. But has anyone used this product for a while and is it still as good after 6 months+ ?

Does it work as well on the exterior or has anyone found it wears off after a short period of time?

They claim a 5 Year guarentee...But are there any exclusions to this which mean you have to do certain things to keep it under that guarentee??

It might be a good thing to have but with the cost of it I want to know how well it has been working as you can buy a lot of polish and cleaner for £399.00.

Thanks for your help!

Paint and fabric sealers?

Maybe I can offer some expertise as a Chemist / Chemical Engineer with a pair of university degrees and almost 30 years experience in the petrochemical industry.

The type of product you are talking about uses a mixture of Fluoro-polymers and Teflon (both good quality products from the DuPont company). The Fluoro-polymers treat fabrics so that they repel water - our Eriba Triton has a pop-top roof and the roof fabric is factory treated with a Fluoro-polymer.

The difference doing this treatment post-manufacture is that they can't use the "good" solvents to ensure a good bond between the Fluoro-polymer and the fabric.

And you can buy the self same Fluoro-polymer products yourself in a spray bottle - such as 303 High Tech Fabric Guard - about

Thanks,

I am always weary of many claims of products like this. Even if it is just because the atmosphere and normal wear and tear will get through most things.

Hi Rich,

Quote "I am always weary of many claims of products like this"

These products really do work, I've treated our Berghaus jackets and our old Eriba pop-top with commercial Fluoro-polymer (303 brand) and it does what it says on the bottle.

The Fluoro-polymer can wear off quite quickly - around the cuffs and body on the Berghaus jackets - and need re-treating every year or so - but the backs of the jackets are like new after 5 or more years - the water just runs off.

So for example, in a caravan the seat cushions will need much more frequent treatment than the seat backs.

But I can't see how you would possibly use more than 4 bottles to totally cover the inside and outside of a caravan - and so you're paying a lot of money for the labour - ignoring the fact that buy the material in bulk

Hi Rob,

The reason I am weary is not that the product will not work( when applied during manufacture) but a product like this has not been manufactured into the materials used. So as you say bonding is an issue.
