Yesterday I went into the Tesco at Cam in Gloucestershire. Bought a couple of things and did the self scan. All the goods swiped through, but when I went to use contactless, I noticed that payment pad was dark and I could not read it. Also my contactless card was not being read as the shopping monitor was waiting for payment.
As I had scanned the items I called across the lady manning the self scan. She told me that I needed to insert my card and enter my PIN which I did. I could not see if it had been accepted and collected the couple of goods anyway at the same time I realised I had forgotten to bring in a bag. As I use an elbow stick a bit of fun and games carrying the few goods, but made it back to the car.
On the way home we decided to pop into a local pub for a pint. Ordered drinks and opened wallet to pay and realised that my card was not in its usual place. It then dawned on me that I left the card in the machine at Tesco. My fault as too used to using contactless and the screen did not light up on the pay machine telling you to remove your card plus thinking about carrying the few items to the car without dropping anything.
As you can spend up to £100 at a time using contactless I panicked and virtually gulped down the beer and drove back to the store a 20 mile round trip. Someone had handed in the card and it had to be retrieve from the manager's safe. Initially unfortunately the manager was somewhere on the shop floor and nowhere to be found even though they called for the person over the tannoy system. Eventually he was found and I was happily re-united with my card.
Sadly the lager beer that I gulped down was an unknown brand as that is all that the pub had and although it was a low alcohol beer it left an awful taste in my mouth. First time I have come across an English pub where only foreign lagers are sold and it was a local community pub! However in between the rain we managed to have a BBQ and had a decent pint of lager to rinse out my mouth!
