As anyone been to the park resorts sites on the isle of wight, if so are they suitable for a wheelchair user or someone with walking difficulties. What are the showers like and not forgetting the toilet blocks. I believe there about 3 or 4 sites belonging to this company we are thinking of the one named Thorness Bay. near Cowes. What is Cowes like please.

Erica, I live in Cowes, and know Thorness quite well, from days well before Park resorts took it over. It is mainly a static home park, and caters for those mainly. The touring park is at the top of the site, which is on quite a slope, and the roadways are not that good.Cowes as a town is something and nothing really, it only comes alive for a few weeks in the summer, end of July and first couple of weeks in August, and caters for the sailing fraternity.I would say that disabled access is somewhat dismal and there is not all that much to do in the town itself, unless you like shopping in sailing type shops.

Whilst most places on the Island are on, or have pretty steep hills in them, or around them, my personal opinion for a good place for disabled access has to be Ryde, secondly Sandown and thirdly Shanklin.

Ryde has the best in the way of places to eat, pubs, and leisure activities, a wonderful seafront and has tenpin bowling etc, which is not availabe anywhere else on the Island.

A good site, quiet but really nice, and has just had a new toilet block built, Beaper Farm at Ryde, and at a fraction of the cost of Thorness , (two people, electric hookup, van and awning.

damian, Thanks for your message it seems we will have to think again about Cowes but Ryde does sound ok, just what we would want from a holiday. I have heard of Beaper farm, there,s a rally going there in august sometime and we where thinking of going on that but my husband fancied the park resorts group and we have since found out that theres a site call lower hyde which i think is near ryde not sure will need check that out.

Erica, Lower Hyde is near Shanklin,,look at this link: http://www.ukcampsite.com/southern-england/lower-hyde-holiday-park.htm

It is a very busy family park, good facilities, but can get very noisy too.

There is no such place as Bembridge Bay , there is Whitecliff Bay at Bembridge, or Nodes Point at Bembridge, but Nodes Point does NOT take tourers, so I assume you mean Whitecliff.

This is a huge site covering both sides of the road running between Sandown and Bembridge. One of the caravan fields is terraced and the pitches are good, the other field is gently sloping so blocks would probably be needed. The main reception, club and static homes are on the sea side of the road and it is a steep climb down to the private beach, however,,a short drive will take you to Sandown sea front where access is very easy, especially at Yaverland where there is a ramp to the beach, or if you go further along and on to the front access is level to the beach. Lots of eating places and pubs in the area, most with some kind of entertainment during the summer months. Sandown also is home to the Zoo, which has the largest collection of breeding Big Cats in the country, and the Dinosaur museum, as well as the usual seaside things, ice creams, crazy golf, etc etc

ERICA, We stayed at thorness bay last year for two weeks in september, whilst we where there another couple arrived and the lady was disabled, this lady was confined to a wheel chair but adviced us that she regularely stayed on thorness bay as the site was very disabled friendly. indeed we had commented ourselves that it was unusual to see a dedicated disabled toilet shower block and it was spotlessly clean which is something you do not see too often on commerciall sites. the isle of white by its very nature as a small island is not very flat so very few sites on the island are easy to navigate but again at least at thorness there are very few steps and if there are any they have complied with the disability access laws and provided ramps. As damian states cowes is a bit "boaty" and we found it to be a bit stuck up as a result so we stayed away, but the island overall is superb, rhyde is the main town and very busy, shanklin, sandown, ventnor and all the other little villages are a delight to visit. on prices last year we paid 112.00 for two weeks at thorness bay this year we have paid 148.00 (slightly earlier) I find this to be very cheap considering it includes two adults two kids two dogs electric awning passes for club and pool and this is the best bit the ferry is also included, saving me 78.00 for my seat alhambra and 27 foot van. lower hyde touring pitches are definately not disabled friendly unless they have been radically changed since we had a look last year.
