patching my compass

Hiya folks.

I'm new to this so all help is greatly appreciated. I had a slight accident whilst towing my compass corona which ended up with me damaging the body work and wheel spat around the wheel arch. I have torn the aluminium skin on the side and some of the plywood underneath the skin.

I have had a few quotes and they have all suggested I need a whole new panel to do it properly. The trouble is, I can't afford it. I am hoping to patch the panel and believe I can do this quite successfully by adhering a fabricated aluminium panel onto the repaired plywood.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what to use to bond the two together?

Hi David,

Have you thought of claiming via your caravan insurance?

If the caravan is newish - then a DIY patched repair will have serious impact on it's value, but if the van is towards the end of it's life then a DIY panel will do.

One of the Sikaflex bonding sealants would be a good start - check their web-site for advice...

Thanks Rob

Somewhat embarrisingly, my insurance did not cover me whilst towing and the whole incident was a result of a number of events, all caused by me, which now leaves me facing the ultimate decision.....

My van is a 2004 which I bought at an auction (finance recovery)and is certainly going to push my coachwork skills to the limit. I am looking to fabricate a panel from sheet aluminium and get it looking ok, whilst I save up the money to get the repair done properly. I believe the other parts (wheel spat and awning rail) will be easy enough to come by, albeit at a cost, but I'll need those anyway right...

Thanks again for the advice.
