Hi all, does anybody have any reports good or bad for Pavilion Royal just south of Biarritz at bidart. We have just booked for two weeks next year in early July; your comments would be much appreciated, places to go things to do & see etc.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas & a very enjoyable caravanning new year for 2007.

Allan & Gill.

Allan, we have been to this site twice and will probably go again .. so from that you can assume that it's worth the journey. The site has direct access onto the beach and is popular with surfers.

We were pitched on both occasions on the edge of the site, over the hedge and fence a public footpath goes down the side to the beach and we did find it a bit noisy during the night with youths going to and from the beach during the early hours.

There are lots of very interesting places to visit, when we were there each Wednesday night there was a Basque festival night in St John de Luz (10 miles approx), with music and a festival bull which was carried through the crowd at shoulder height - firing fireworks from it! They also had a battle of confetti where it's thrown around - we found bits in the caravan for ages where it was stuck to our clothing. We also went up La Rhune, a small tarin which travels up through the clouds to the summit of a mountain, also visited San Sebastian in Spain and of course Biarritz and surrounding towns and areas.

The people are very proud of being Basque and wear the costumes, berets etc. We found the weather to be unreliable as it's on the edge of the Pyranees and we did have a lot of rain - even in late July.

Writing this has brought back happy memories of our holidays and I have the urge to go again ... hope you enjoy the site and the area, best wishes Tony

We were there in 2002 and I rather liked the site and certainly would return there if we were in that part of France. The guy that manages the site is often at the NEC in February if you can get along there. Some of the pitches nearer to the beach need some leveling. We were intially allocated a pitch here but moved further back into the site. Nice area.

We've been going for the past 6 years and again this year. We first went about 17 years ago for three years running and then had a break so I'm completely sold on the place.

We usually book through the CC and go Plymouth to Santander ( 18 Hours ) it is quite pricey but it starts the holiday off the way I like.

It's virtually motorway all of the way into France so not a difficult drive, although the stretch from San Sebastien to Biarritz can become quite congested at peak periods.

The beach is great but the sea can be a bit rough although the Lifeguards are very strict and rightly so. At low tide we often walk along into Biarritz which is great.

The locals are friendly and the scenery is spectacular. Bayonne, the Basque capital is quite nice with some good pavement cafe's along the river, as is St Jean de Luz, San Sebastien, Biarritz and the lake at St Pee sur Nivelle. Trips into the mountains are an absolute must.

Hi, Allan

We have been to Pavilion Royal twice and really enjoyed the site. However on our last trip, which was in late July the site was overrun with French teenagers. We had no problem with that but they did play loud obscene rap music that was in English.

Some of the holiday-makers did complain as they had young children with them and it caused rather a unpleasant atmosphere.

The beach is accessed down some rather steep steps and as Jim Say's the sea can be dangerous and the life guards are very strict indeed.

The area can't be faulted with plenty to do and see.

Hope you enjoy your holiday

Regards Nidge
