Hi all

Can someone tell me how PC arrive at their top 100 sites?

The reason I ask, is we have just returned from a top five site, (which we booked becasue of PC position), to find although adequate, cannot understand why it is regarded as one of the top five sites in the UK.

Upon looking at the top 100, I was amazed to find the omission of many CC Sites, which have featured well in the past.

Have the goal posts been moved?

Thanks for your comments and explanations.

Your not on your own in thinking that Tracey.

We are on a supposed 5 Rose park and to be honest I couldn't rate it better than 3+. If it wasn't for a two year old toilet block it would be a field with 4 water taps.

They also hold a silver bellamy award despite not recycling on site, not encourageing wildlife due to them mowing every bit of grass to death. I've never seen so much weed killer being used in my life either.

I thought Mr Bellamy stood for conservation of flora and fawna and also encouraged people to be wildlife friendly.

In some cases (not PC's i have to say)I wonder if the "membership" subscription fee dictates an out come. I do hope I'm wrong in saying that, but from wht I see it does cross ones mind.

Could be wrong on this but I thought the magazine's grading of the top 100 came from readers feedback and votes.

Anyone know for certain?

I suppose it depends on how they are judged, even if voted for by readers. Club sites tend to do well on quality of facilities but don't usually have many of the things that commercial sites have like pools and bars so even on a quality and facility basis its difficult to compete in some peoples minds. Give me a Club site any time!

We stayed at one of the sites in the top 10, and felt very pressurised into giving a positive review. To the extent that th staff on site would post the form for you!

Hi,

We used the Top 100 Sites as a guide when we first started caravanning and it has never let us down yet.

We also use UKCampsite Reviews to back up the Top 100.

Sorry, I don't have the crieria for the Top 100.

Cheers,

Alex.

We to have asked the question as we've now stayed at 3 sites listed in this years PC top 100 sites, and I know for a fact if I was to suggest to my wife about going back to 2 of them I think she'd blow her top, it really does make you think about how/whom judges these sites

I can't be 100% certain but if my memory is correct the top 100 sites are voted for by readers of Practical Caravan Magazine.

Readers nominate their favourite sites and the ones with the highest number of nominations are voted on by the readers (I think)

I'll try to find out what criteria is used and how the top 100 is decided.

One man's meat is another man's poison, I have my own list of favourites most of which are 5 van sites.

I would hesitate to nominate my favourites in case they became so popular that I had to book in advance in order to use them ;0)

I think you're right Parksy!

I also agree with you about the 5-van sites being our favourites but would never broadcast which ones for the same reason.

I managed to find out how the top 100 sites are decided.

Coupons are printed in Practical Caravan Magazine inviting readers to vote for their favourite site. These coupons are also available at caravan parks and internet users can vote online.

Magazine staff receive thousands of votes, these are collated and to ensure fairness for smaller sites the number of votes cast for a site is divided by the number of pitches. This average gives the Top 100 sites as chosen by those who voted.

Extra categories which include the 12 regional winners, Pet Friendly sites, Sites which are good for families, small sites, those which are open all year and adult only sites are added by magazine editorial staff.

Nominations for the Top 100 sites 2011 is now open so if your favourite site isn't included - get voting!

You can vote online at Top 100 sites 2011

Thank you everyone for your replies, and Parksy for checking how the scoring is worked out.

This all begun due to a recent disappointment, but I think maybe our expectations were high after visiting a top 5 site and the comments we had previously read in PC. We have learnt by this.

I think it is interesting that we keep certain parks secret, this is a good idea that we will also adopt.
