Pine tree sap removal

Off to France this coming Friday but remembered today hadn't cleaned the Pine tree sap from the last trip off the roof of van.Only thing to hand was some tar and bug remover which, with a lot of patience and rubbing finally did the job. I know it's probably easier to get rid of it before it sets hard but does anyone know the best solvent for the job. (Apart from don't park under Pine trees!!!!)
 
Alcohol rub or alcohol based cleaner and nail varnish remover gets it off clothing.

Silicon waxing the roof will help stop dirt and sap sticking.
