Political lobbing - does the CC do it?

I found some interested stats relating to caravanning on the BBC website, I've no idea if they're true but if so the number are pretty impressive and so we should have a reasonable amount of political clout.maybe?

Taken from the BBC website:-

"There are 3000 holiday parks in the UK and nearly 2m people go away in their caravans each year.

Caravan holidays contribute £1.9bn per annum to the economy and account for 14% of all UK holiday spend".

As a newboy to caravanning a lot to do with this past time seems to be an uphill battle! And now to top it all, I've just read a few links on this forum telling me we're universal hated by motorway service station, no parking facilities or in extreme cases bespoke signs for caravans directing you straight back onto the motorway!

At the extreme, this is forcing us to continue on our way without adequate rest breaks and to the point where we could be a danger to ourselves and others. I know this is probably over egging thing a bit, but should we have to settle for it?

So getting to the point, does the caravan club carry out any political lobbing on behalf of its members and if not should it?

And if the CC is not raising issues affecting us, who is?

I'm going to be writing to my MP about the service station issue, it would be good if others did the same.

I've never been politically active, but by heck we put up with some s**t3 that it seems our European brothers don't have to.

From wondering around the NEC, it seems caravaners are on the whole from the honest god fearing middle classes..the social class that pays the most tax and takes the least out of the system! Just the sort of people the main parties want to win over.

I'm probably talking b**ocks but having a rant killed some time during my lunch break!

"Political lobbing"

That got me really excited. I thought it was a new sport for the elctorate, similar to "Dwarf Tossing"

I had visions of digruntled voters being able to put Brown in one of those stone throwing siege machines and launching him skywards or putting Darling in a bungy powered sling and aiming him at Prescott as he huffed and puffed as fast as his little legs would carry him

Ah well, back to the "Write to them" web site.

I dunno about the amount of money that caravaners put into the national economy - but it's generally recongnised in the tourist industry that caravaner's (particularly those taking short breaks) contribute relatively little to local communities.

They tend to take there foodstuffs and alcohol with them - and their spending is limited to fuel and some minor sundries.

I'm not knocking this - it's what we do ourselves ;), but local tourist boards generally reckon that we are not worth the trouble we cause ;)

Having said that - get out as much as you can this year (let's all hope for some decent weather) because I have a gloomy feeling that 2008 is going to be the last year that this caper is going to be to be truly viable.

I think we should start a group lottery over which will be the first UK caravan manufacturer to cease trading in 2008, I have my own chosen pony - any takers for a bet?

Surely 'Dwarf Tossing' is a reference to 'Lord of the Rings?'

And those siege-machines are called 'Trebuchets' - they've got a working one at Warwick Castle - amazing bit of kit!
