poor sound from TV when watching DVD?

We have a Digitrex 19" Tv which we watch in the caravan. Absolutely great picture but when we use a DVD the sound is so low we can't watch it, although we've turned up the volume to its maximum.Anyone else experienced this?Any help appreciated.
