We are considering replacing our cotton porch awning which we use in the winter for one of the new lightweight variety. Anything to watch out for please?

Hi Eileen

We use a lightweight porch awning and the first thing to watch out for is sticking zips on the entrances. I use awning rail spray to ease the zips and care should be taken not to peg the awning out too tightly which stretches the zips.

The ends of the slim poles can bump against the caravan sides in windy weather, I use large rubber suckers to try to prevent dents.

Lightweight porch awnings are inexpensive, easy to store and easy to erect and I wouldn't revert back to the heavier type now.

Thank you for that information - my husband was worried about dents but I felt it would be quicker to erect for short stay holidays at this time of year.

Hi Eileen,

we have just changed back to a traditional porch awning, after a lightweight one dented the side of our new caravan.

It is easier to take a lightweight one down when it's wet and just put it in a wet locker for the journey home, but the Bradcot porch we have now is just as quick to erect and dismantle. It also stood up to a bad storm on the last August bank holiday!

Started with the full when we changed vans, too big and cumbersome for weekends, sold it and got a Bradcot Portico XL, excelent space the easy alloy poles great, oh then Mrs Martin dented the van twice when we putting it up. This isn't the reason for this now being up for sale, the reason is the getting it dry weekend after weekend, almost as bad as the full awning as just as heavy to dry and no garage to hang it in. Now have a sunncamp ultima 390, had it up in some pretty rough weather on the east yorks coast with no buffeting or banging and 100% watertight, as long as it is errected properly you should have no problems
