Hi everyone, I would really appreciate some advice please. We are arriving in Caen at about 9:30 pm in a few weeks on our way to Vendee. I believe it is possible to park in the port and spend the night there. Has anyone done that? I'm wondering whether it would be better to drive on and stay in one of the pull ins I've also heard about. On the way back, the ferry is an early one so we will be spending the previous night at the port then.

Regards

Keith

Most people stay at Camping Les Pommiers.

This site is a municipal site owned by the town of Ouistreham where the ferry docks and it is geared up to receive late ferry arrivals and indeed will be expecting arrivals to coincide with a ferry arrival.
It is less than 1 mile from the port.
I agree with the 4th and 5th reviews by Berrio and Milliecharles shown in the link above.

We always stay in the ferry terminal prior to an early morning departure. Just drive through the check in booth (they won't let you actually check in) and pull over to the left up against the security fence.

Going South, we drive to just South of Falaise and there is a nice aire there - a manned one, with an all night cafe. We've never had any problems parked in with the lorries. Wouldn't ever stop in an unmanned one!

Thanks for these replies. Very helpful. I didnt know there are manned aires. I'll try find out if there are any en route. But I will also send a booking enquiry to Les Pommieres. We are spending the night in a motorway services on friday night before the ferry on saturday so it would be great to have an actual site to go to off the ferrt rahter than spending a second night on the road.

By manned I mean ones with all night petrol stations and cafes. What is your route going to be?

Hi Paul,
Not sure yet, whichever the snooper picks! I've emailed les pommieres. The stops you mention with cafés and facilities sound good though. We haven'tused any before, as youcan probably tell. This is our second summer with the caravan and so far we've always travelled through the day to a site we arrive at in the evening.

Be a bit aware of the self service Exxon fuel station near Les Pomiers. Quite often will not accept UK credit cards. What appears to be the kiosk is actually nothing to do with. Exxon and the owner seems to get pretty PO'd about complaints.
