Thinking of spending a couple of months in Portugal next winter - does anyone have any recommendations for sites near the coast?

Be warned - that long Atlantic coast of Portugal can dish out some pretty miserable weather in the winter months. We have tried a couple of times at a place called Ortega (inland from Lisbon) and each time, after an idyllic start, have had to beat a retreat into Spain. If you are interested, there are a series of municipal sites located on barragems (dammed rivers creating a leisure lake behind) and we have stayed twice at Barragem de Belver which is a very nice site at ridiculously low prices. After discounts for this, that and the other (including a 50% one for being over 65 (or was it 60) we found ourselves paying something like £4 a night including 16 amps of electricity !
But Oh, when the weather turns !!!!

Winter on the Algarve. We have overwintered in Spain and Portugal for the last 10 years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For the last few years we have travelled directly to the Algarve (via Dunkerque) and stayed at Armacao de Pera (under Albufeira in the CC handbook). The winter weather can be quite variable but is always a lot better than U.K., typically +8 - 10 deg C. Last winter was the wettest that we have experienced but I think all of southern Europe was equally affected.
There are two sites listed under Armacao de Pera, Canelas is approx 15 mins form the town and Campismo de Armacao is on the edge of the town itself and is a 10 min walk from the seafront and the shops. As we have only stopped at the latter, I cannot comment further on Canelas. We enjoy our time at Campismo de Armacao which suits our needs. It is a large rather unruly site without marked pitches i.e. first come, first served. You can take as much space as your Caravan, (Motorhome), Awning, Car, Windbreak, Washing Line, etc. will occupy. People used to the more disiplined marked pitches in Spain and elsewhere find this unsettling! There are excellent walks near the site, important to us with a dog. The site has a snack bar and resturant open all year and has all the usual facilities, even a free library! There are resturants, bars and supermarkets all within walking distance and the main Algarve shopping centres are a short drive away. The site winter fees for us, car, caravan, awning, electricity, dog is free, is €11.50/night. Hope you find this useful and good luck on your travels.

Hi Paul
I overwintered this year at Turiscampo, near Pria de luz, Lagos it is a site I would commend, the C&CC run a rally there, it is a well organised and clean site, they take Camping Cheques.

Completly agree with hymerman about Touriscampo. Great site and well run, and it's in a good position for seeing the area.
They accept ACSI at 13euros per night.
