Re the letter from G Harris in the recent isuue of Practical Caravan on the subject of power loss.

Until recently, I towed a 15ft Abbey Sarari with a Saab 95 2.2 diesel estate. The outfit towed very well until I tried to use the cruise control. On approaching a hill which needed a change down, the car went into safety mode, resulting in a loss of power. When I stopped the car and engine, the car returned to normal after restarting. It is my opinion, that the engine management system sensed that there may have been a problem with the engine because of the weight of the caravan and went into safety mode.

Hello Tony,

Unless the system has been interrogated by the diagnostic unit that garages have, it may be erroneous to conclude the power loss is due to the extra mass of the caravan.

I have a Saab 9-3 diesel 2.2 and my car has for no apparent reason dropped into limp-home mode when driving solo, and as you say having stopped and restarted the ECU has reset.

Despite several returns to the garage, no conclusive information was gathered from the engine fault log.

Thanks for the comment John. I have tried the cruise control driving solo without any problem. I have also used the cruise control with the caravan on for a many miles without the system going into safety but it seems to be the hills that cause the problem. I might try slight pressure on the accelerator as I approach a hill to overcome the criuse control.
