I have a 7 year old Sterling Trekker. I would like to have the Powr Touch caravan mover fitted.

However I have two problems.

Firstly my battery compartment appears to be big enough for an 85ah battery at most but all indications are to get a 110 ah battery.

Secondly I leave the caravan in storage.. so are the fixed movers safe or do they attract attention?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

HELLO DENNIS, I DONT THINK ANYONE WILL FIT A MOVER WITHOUT A 110 BATTERY SO YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THAT, BUT MAINLY I THINK YOU NEED TO LOOK ANOTHER CARAVAN MOVER, I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE AND THE POWRTOUCH MOVERS ARE SO DAMN SLOW !! I HAD ONE FITTED (POWRTOUCH 1) AND THE GEARBOX GOT DAMAGED DUE TO IT BEING THE WRONG ONE. ANY HOW POWERTOCH WERE GREAT AND THEY UPGRADED ME TO A POWRTOUCH 3 AND ONLY CHARGED ME THE EXTRA CASH, HOWEVER THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS THING WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER IN SPEED AND MOMENTUM TO PULL BUT IM STILL VERY DISSAPOINTED WITH THE RESULTS.... I BUMPED IN TO SOMEONE LAST SUMMER WHO MOVED HIS CARAVAN ON SITE AND IT WAS SO MUCH MORE RESPONSIVE AND QUICKER TO MANOUVRE THAN MINE AND HE HAD A SIMILAR SIZE VAN, IT WAS A TRAUMA MOVER , HE ALSO TOLD ME THAT HIS BROTHER HAD HAD TWO POWR TOUCH MOVERS AND HE TOO WAS DISAPOINTED WITH THEM, BASICALLY I THINK IM SAYING THAT IF I WAS TO HAVE ANOTHER FITTED I WOULD NOT CHOOSE A POWR TOUCH AGAIN.... JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT ...HAVE A GOOD SHOP AROUND GLEN

You dont neccessarily need a 110 Ah battery with a wheel drive mover. It all depends if you are able to keep the battery well charged.

If its on charge at home, on site and in transit you will be okay unless you have an exceptionally demanding need whilst using it.

If you are away from power then note that changing from 85 to 110Ah buys you only 25% more capability.

I use a 90Ah with my 1700kg van with no problems but the van features a charger able to provide an excellent charge whilst the van is being towed.

Hi Dennis

I have got a powrtouch fitted to a 1700kg Hymer and find it brilliant. My battery is a 110 ah and is more than enough, afraid I can't comment on the 85ah battery but I'm sure powrtouch would be able to advise you.

I do not understand what you mean by a fixed mover attracting attention when in storage. Our van is in storage and the only attention we get is a audience simply agog at the ease of maneuvering a large van with such ease.

I have to disagree with Glen's comments about the powrtouch been slow, why would you want to move your van at speed anyway? better safe than sorry knowing that you have will not bump in to anything.

As Glen Say's powrtouch customer service is second to none and doe's what it says in the adverts "No Quibble 5 year Guarantee"

Hope this helps

Regards

Nidge

I fitted a Powrtouch mover to our Bailey Ranger last year that is powered by an 85 amp battery.

We've never had any problems and it provides plenty of power to operate the mover.

Watch Powrtouch at a Show - they demonstrate all day on an 85ah battery. The slow motion is a great advantage, more time to correct your mistakes ! Their service is excellent. Go for it.

We had a Reich mover fitted when we bought our Compass four and a half years ago. The mover has been excellent and completely fault-free. At the same time we had an 85 a/h battery fitted, which is still going strong.

Hi,

I had a motor mover fitted to my van last spring. After a lot of research on this and other sites plus looking at the different types of movers at the Caravan Show I decided on the Powrtouch and would not hesitate to recommend it. According to the van handbook the biggest battery that would fit in the battery compartment was 85. I phoned Powrtouch (found them very helpful)but they reassured me that although they recommended 110 it would work fine with the less powerful battery. My understanding was that the strength of power from both batteries is the same but the 110 is capable of powering the mover for longer periods between charges.

I approached my local dealer for advise on a new battery and they were able to supply a more compact size battery which was either 100 or 110 but no larger in size than my old 85.

Sorry I cannot give you the make or the exact size of that battery at present, my van is in the workshop for service so I cannot check and see.

As for speed as someone as mentioned, no it doesn't fly along but moves steadily at a pace I can easily control.

You asked about the mover attracting attention on a storage facility I am guessing you mean will some lowlife steal the mover. I have never heard of this happening but that is not to say it couldn't happen. I don't know if the time required to dismantle the unit in a condition that it could be refitted and without take the control box from the inside of the van would be worth the risk to a theif.

Has anyone else on the Forum heard of a mover being stolen?

We have had the Carver mover for about 6 years and it doesn't perform any differently on the 100 amp hour battery then it did for years on the 85 amp hour one.

As has been said the performance will last longer on the bigger capacity.

If like us you have the battery fully charged all the time as the van is either on hook up at home/on tow/on site then the 85 amp hour will do.

I wouldn't worry about being refused fitting if you are prepared to meet the criteria required

You have the correct amount of cash available to pay for the installation
