Powrtouch on the move

I engaged my Powrtouch and one of the motors would not stop running with the result that the caravan trundled on towards the garage, fortunatly with my friend was crushed between the van and the garage. The only way to stop it was to turn off the vans isolator.

The Powrtouch maintenance man said that it was due to dirty points on the motor. He said if it happens again he will change the motor!

Note:- if you use mover always have someone to jam between the van and what it is going to hit or pay for the bent panel.

I had the running on problem in Brittany when the rain got into the remote control

They do advise having the isolation switch accessible by leaving the locker door open when using the mover

I have never heard of this before, is this a common fault with powrtouch, or do other makes have this problem?

Also i understood that my reich motors were controlled via relays in the electronics panel, what are these motor points for?

Did you think to apply the hand brake?

Any type of remote when allowed to get wet, unless it is stated as waterproof, will short out across the contacts in the handset and cause problems as, Watson(JohnG) as previously stated, the new type of remote looks different....

As the OP states

The caravan trundled on towards the garage, fortunatly with my friend was crushed between the van and the garage. The only way to stop it was to turn off the vans isolator.

It says in the handbook :

The Isolation switch must be accessible at all times when parking and moving the caravan/trailer

I dont think that it is a major safety issue.

The remote is designed to be used on a caravan outdoors and as such should be used outdoors unlike a TV or its remote

Putting it in a plastic bag is a good idea but in 10+ years its only been a problem once and with hindsight plastic bag is at the ready

The point was that the locker door should be left open to give access to the isolator switch in any untoward event

The remote as j watson as stated should be shower proof for it to be fit for purpose.

The main safety issue is the "points" in the motor sticking, i would like to know what these actually are for.

I will be looking at the feasibility of using the mover with the battery lid down, but i have adopted the habit of standing well back from the van when i reverse it into the drive, so a rethink is required, the problem is if it sticks when moving up to the cars ball for hitching, if it runs on then, reaction time is not enough for it to hit the bumper, even in creep mode.

Ray

I have just been into my van to have a look at the remote..

water will be able to get in through the hole where the remote cable plugs in... mine has not got a cover over it, you would not reqire more than a few drops of rain, to get in and cause problems, i suspect this more than sticking " points ".....

My controller is the same as Sprocket's.

I used it about 10 times last summer during the six weeks torrential rain at the Hebridean Islands. No problems.

However I and FIL noticed that if he used his Truma at the same time as me and my Powrtouch they both stopped working.

That said the unit is clearly for outside use and should not fail as has happened.

I can say Powrtouch replaced my broken engagement handle by return.

As John W says , superb service.

Cheers

The white controllers are operated on AM the new blue ones operate on FM, the new ones wont cut out as much by AM signal interference.....Oh and there are no "points" in the motor.....

Hello Roy,

I would have thought that the first point of contact should have been with the company that manufactured the product. I therefore made the telephone call to Powrtouch, as I felt that they needed to know about this situation, as it obviously could impinge on thier business. I see that within 10 minutes they had posted on this thread, requesting you to contact them.

They confirmed that the hand control is shower proof, but would need to be covered in a downpour.

I have a van on order that will have a Powrtouch Mover fitted to it, I can confirm that they gave me excellent support when I asked about the posioning of it, in relationship to the wheels.

Best regards,

George

Lets hope roy gives us some feedback from powewheel tech, although i have a reich, movers seem to operate all in a similar way, no points in the motor? sounds like the "engineer" wasn't sure what the problem was.

It sounds more like a sticking relay in the control panel or a remote problem

I have my remote on a cord round my neck and inside a waterproof jacket when its raining

I think powr touch offer excellent customer service and warranty,I am suprised that the manufacturer is not one of the first point of call .

i used to leave my locker open for the isolation switch but has a mis hap where the front end jockey slipped down so I damaged the cover(my error) wont make thatmistake again !

Hi there everybody.

Thanks for all your comments. I only posted it because of the danger to the vans.

The service man was a Powrtouch engineer or one of their agents.

The service man did say it was a dirty motor point problem.

The complaint was handled by Powrtouch under their 5 year guarantee cover.

No coplaints about their service, at all.

When I first contacted them I said it was a handset problem and they sent a new one. This handset had a broken wire to the battery connection. So I soldered it and it worked fine.

Finally the engineer gave me another hanset from his van - so I have handsets coming out of my ears.
