Thought this was interesting, with rises in the price of living, perhaps a change in car buying habits / demands - maybe a combination of factors. Buying a good older used car is now more costly.

We bought our 1996 Corolla in 2012 and if we sold it tomorrow we would get back what we paid for it. The cost of our 2018 Jeep is still the same neither up or down. However similar models on Autotrader have higher mileage, are lower spec and don't have a full dealer service history. The latter seems to add another £2-3k?

It’s been going on since Covid eased. The shortage of new cars caused by global supply chain problems made pre owned cars more expensive as demand exceeded supply. My grandson took delivery of a BMW 5 series but it wasn’t fitted with some of the listed kit. When he objected the dealer asked if he wanted to cancel the order at no charge. “Rock and hard place “ spring to mind. But his TeslaY came with a reduction in list price.

I bought a Citroen C1 during Covid as a runabout in 2020 - three years later I sold it for the same price I'd paid for it - in between it's value shot up to silly heights.

Back in 1993 we had a Lada and strangely it was quite a reliable car. At the time we had no inkling of their reputation.
Back in the '70s I had a Fiat 124, the car on which the Lada is based - the bodywork was thin steel which flexed and rusted quickly but all the mechanicals were very robust and more advanced than British cars of the era - Lada used thicker steel for all the body panels to cope with the rigours of Russian weather so was probably a better all-round car than many when it was introduced.
