Problems with used van

Hi

Hoping someone can offer a bit of advice...

I just bought an old (1992) used van. Thought I would buy something old as this is my first van, and I want to get some experience before I spend big money. On towing it for the first time, I noticed a sort of 'dunk' noise on braking, but not on pulling off. I looked it up on this forum, and thought that it indicated that the damper had gone. However another thread indicated that if you can push the damper in and it comes back out slowly, then it should be OK.

I've just done this, and theres a fair bit of resistance when I push it in, and it comes back out slowly. Since this van has been more than likely stood for quite some time, is there a chance that the damper may just need greasing?

I also think the battery is shot, it just about powers the lights, but shows low volts on the battery charger. I brought it home and charged it on my car battery charger, until it indicated it to be full, but when I put it back in the van, it still shows low volts. Since there isnt enough power in it to power the water pump, am I right in assuming, when I use an electric hookup, it will convert 240V ac down to 12V dc for immediate use?

thanks for any advice

Rick

Hi Richard, your damper seems to be ok, next to check is wheter your brakes & brake operating rod are correctly adjusted

check your batery with a meter it should show 12.7v if fully charged,12v or less then it is flat
