I have a whale 921 which Im finding when I change the water it whirrs as if it is pumping but nothing is happening.. If I unplug and plug it back in you can then hear it pumping correctly. Problem I've had is when we are out it starts whirring without pumping and flatens the battery... Has anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas?? Cheers Richard

Richard, some pumps , and I think Whale are one of the worst for this, do not have an air escape from the pump, so when you change water without stopping the pump, it creates a vortex effect, and will not prime the impeller.

Best bet is always turn it off before changing water, and turn it off when going out, or not likely to be used for a period of time.

Hello Richard,

I concure with damian, but I also would suggest that everytime you change the water, unplug the pump from the caravan, then drop it into the new water barrel. This allows the water to cover the impeller and natuarally prime the pump, then plug it back into the caravan.

I, too, always unplug the pump from the 'van, then 'dunk' the pump into the re-filled water barrel a couple of times to remove any air locks before re-plugging the pump back into the 'van. Also switch the pump off when going out for any length of time - I have suffered from 'iffy' or ill adjusted micro switches once too often.

Thanks for that.. I had decided I had a dodgy pump and was looking for a replacement... I think I will still get one as a spare but your responses have put my mind at rest!!... Thanks again Richard

Had similar problem, found that hose connection to actual pump was loose and letting the water escape. Fixed with a standard ring clamp but trying to get a new pump unit under warranty as I don't see why I should have a 6 month old faulty pump unit.
