Just received this email from the Police, it refers to the East Midlands area:

PUPS ADOPTION SCAM - Ringmaster Message 1008

Dog lovers are being warned by Consumer Direct East Midlands not to fall for a scam to adopt a puppy.

Con artists are placing online adverts for pedigree puppies available for adoption or offering puppies free to a good home, as long as the prospective owner agrees to pay transport costs.

In an exchange of e-mails, the scammers request the funds to be sent by money transfer and claim they will arrange to have a puppy flown and delivered to you upon receipt.

But once the consumer parts with their money, the tricksters request a further fee to cover insurance and inoculation fees which need to be paid before delivery can be made.

Consumers end up paying hundreds of pounds before finding out that no puppy is going to be delivered.

Sara Barry, of Consumer Direct East Midlands, said: 'Although these adverts can seem genuine, and however cute the pictures might be, I would advise people not to buy a pet on impulse and to choose a reputable, local breeder.'

Anyone stupid enough to `acquire` a dog without seeing it doesn`t, I would suggest, really want one in the first place and deserves to get ripped off mercilessly anyway.

Hi Lisa

It beggers belief really just how low some characters can stoop. Unfortunately, there will always be someone gullible enough to think it appropriate to obtain a pet in this fashion!!!

Thanks for the posting. I hadn't seen this scam.
