Dear Knowledgable Ones

Help

We've decided that we need / want a porch awning. On the CC website they say that the edge of a porch awning shouldn't "foul" fridge vents. I'm guessing they mean that it should clear the vents, probably on either side. Unfortunately we're looking at 320cm awnings which, you guessed, end right in the middle of our vents. Would this be OK or is there a reason why we shouldn't do this.

Many thanks

John and Nic (very new to all this)

John,

The edge of the awning must not obstruct the fridge vents. Any obstruction will affect the operation of the fridge. This is why winter fridge vent covers must be removed if the outside temperature, day or night, rises above 10 degress C.

We have this problem too, and we have to live with one end of the vents being obstructed-but then the fridge is always the run on electricity, not gas. Although this may impair efficiency, if you are going to use the porch awning in the cooler months, I don't think you'll see much difference.

chris,

As john has said ,his awning would finish half way across the vents. Therefore 50 percent of the vent would be blocked.

Ok in cold weather, 10 degress or less, providing he was not useing winter vents and the covered part was not coverering the winter vent outlet, on either gas or electric but definitly not in temps above10 degress.

I read the OP that the edge of his awning finished half way across the vent, not that half the vent is blocked?

As a matter of interest, what is the 'winter vent outlet'? I have a typical Electrolux fridge, which I removed recently to clean the flue, and there is no other special vent or ducting other than for the gas flue...

chris,

Having read my post again i admit it was not clear. Here goes.

With the winter covers on the only real outlet is for the gas at one end of the vent, plus a narrow strip along the top of the vent. Therefore if the gas end was covered problems would occur.

The reason i said half the vent would be covered is because most porch awnings have a flap, tapered from near the top to the bottom of awning, which fits up against the side of the caravan to help stop drafts, as is the case with my Isabella.

Therefore if John's awning came half way accross the vent, due to the flap half the vent would be covered.

In order to open the van door, our porch awning has to go across the fridge vents. We are reconciled to the idea that a seal to the van side in a porch awning is not possible, so are quite happy to peg the side out a little to let air circulate to the fridge vents. Doesn't seem to be a problem on electric then. Not run it on gas.
