Friends of ours would like to take a caravanning holiday in the UK and were thinking that it may be cheaper to drive by car only and rent the caravan when they get there rather than take their outfit all the way including the cost of the ferry. I pointed out to them that this may be difficult because I see an insurance problem. Foreign insurances don't cover third party coverage for caravans but this would probably be assumed when hiring a caravan in the UK. However, in an attempt to overcome this problem, additional third party coverage cannot be arranged before departure because the insurance company will want to have details of registration of the caravan, which, of course being a UK one, don't exist. Furthermore, what number plate would the caravan have? If a traffic offence were committed in the UK and details of the caravan forwarded through to the home country, the authorities would immediately notice that the registration number doesn't tie up with the documentation, so this could lead to difficulties.
Anyone out there with an answer how to handle such a case? While situations like that are probably rarely encountered with private vehicles, I would have thought that one does come across them now and again with HGV's and their semi-trailers. Perhaps someone with connections to the haulage industry has the answer. Surely, the solution should, in principle, be the same for a private car.
