Ah, so you are being paid well or were being paid well in a country where children are/were begging on the street? Is that correct?

Tell me what we can do to help those children from here in the UK and I don't mean a monthly donation to a charity.

We lived in South America and my dad slept with an extremely large and sharp knife under his pillow. I have no doubt he would have used it on an intruder if necessary.

Unfortunately, good manners, respect, honesty and the 'Dunkirk spirit' seem to be just a memory now in the UK. I keep telling myself there are just as many good people as there are bad, but now I'm really not so sure.

I can't comment any further on the pet food situation, a pound or so per dog per day is no great deal if that's what it costs.

I used to do a lot of voluntary work for the RSPCA and some of the sights I've seen would make even a dog hater cry. I'd say horses and donkeys suffer most from abuse. Mainly from neglect and ignorance.

I am sorry but I am not keeping up.

Dogs certainly have sense, all animals and even humans do, but do they have intelligence? Are they able to formulate rational thought? I do not believe so. Dogs will always take the easy way out, if you feed and water and molly coddle it then it will happily play any games you wish. Now cats can be quite evil. A cat will kill for pure pleasure, not hunger. A bit like humans really. A cat will also allow!! you to be its friend, if it chooses, a dog will be anyone's friend as long as its basic needs are satisfied.

I am finding i am 1 message behind here.

Yes, we lived in countries where poverty was rife, and yes, we did whatever we could to assist. In my case it meant I hired people to work for me that I did not necessarily need. In my wife;'s case she worked voluntarily in local schools and orphanages, not just doing the wet tears act, but actually physically trying to improve the situation. Some she won, some she lost.

Was I paid well? Yes, intially i was, but slowly but surely became closer and closer to the Uk domestic average. However, once you have become an expat for a period of time, it is difficult to settle back as a domestice employee. So you stick with the situation. Currently things are very bad as most people are paid in US Dollars and that has taken a free fall against the Pound ands other currencies.

I certainly wouldn't class a dog as a "dumb" animal, far from it and I find it strange why you say they "if it had any sense it would run a mile from humans".

Surely by knowing where their next free meal is coming from shows that they have sense, only a "dumb" animal would run away and have to hunt for it's food, not knowing when it's next meal will be. My dogs, like others dogs, are always pleased to see me so give me a reason why they shouldn't be and should do a runner.

No SL, read what I said again and please don't twist the words.

I said....

"From having a dog as a pet usually makes one a caring person, not just for dogs but all life in general".

Nowhere did I say that to be a caring person you had to own a dog. Also please note the word USUALLY. I'm fully aware of cruelty so I'm sorry, I'm not wearing that either, nice try though ;O)

Again, where did I say owning ANY animal makes one a better person SL?

I know you're now too old but I don't think a lawyer would have been a good vocation for you ... hehheh!

Politician yes :O)

I have a cat and a dog sat on me as I write this, they do no work, sleep a lot get fed and the dogs have trained us to take them out on nice walks. The cats come and go as they please through the cat flap. Pretty smart I think!

Our cats and dogs are much nicer than many people as well.

In fact "the more people I meet the more I love my dogs". That's what it says on my coffee mug.
