Quick towing question

Hi I have had a little accident and my car is in the body shop. Needless to say the courtesy car provided by my insurance company does not have a tow bar. I was meant to be going away tomorrow morning with my caravan for 3 days, all booked and payed for in advance. The site is only 20 miles from where my caravan is stored. Do you think I could get away with just tying the caravans A frame to the towing loop on the loan car for such a short journey (which will be in day light, so no lights needed)?

yes.

for such a short trip that should fine.

you'll need to be extra careful about loading though as the rope wont offer much by way of stabilizing effect.

If this is not a wind up but a serious question, have you considered asking somebody you know, who has a car with a tow bar, to tow it to and from the site for you, as it is only a small distance.Obviously you would pay petrol/diesel costs etc.

I have some friends who will come and tow your caravan to site for you. Unfortunately they only have a white van, so you'll have to travel in your hire car. Let me know.

To 'tie the caravans A frame to the towing loop on the hire car' would be illegal and highly dangerous.

It would invalidate the insurance on the hire car and could lead to prosecution and civil action from the hire car company.

Do not consider it!

am i readin this right.??????

i feel a tad unsure as soon as i've hitched up for the first few minutes as will everyone on here.. but to tie it to the towin eye is "council house mentality" isn't the rear towin eye usually offset too, so even if it were legal it would be well out of line.. i think the rope idea as to be a wind up..

as most hire cars are micra'a just bolt a tow ball to the roof and use the car to tow the van as normal, im sure the hire company wont mind as you will have doubled the micra's value.

........ be careful not to damage the electric fire in the front locker.

Use the towing loop on the back of the hire car or you will have to reverse the 20 miles to the site.

Sounds like a realy good work around to a tricky problem. Always good to see people using intiative.

I advise a few old towels or jumpers wrapped around tow hitch as a sort of pad to reduce the risk of damage to the bumper.

Maybe your husbands puffa jacket.

Be carefull with the choice of rope, we use elasicated bungy type as it allows the car to get some speed up before the van starts rolling, the van catches up after a few yards.

Wouldn't it be easier to get the other half to sit inside the boot, with the tailgate up, holding the tow hitch as a human towball............mind you wou would still not have any electrics - I'll have to work on that one!

Now while we can all scoff at this as thread as a joke and offer all sorts of banter to indicate that it could be done.

One does have to take a reality check and say that it is totally illegal and irresponsible to both try it or to enter into any correspondence suggesting any methodogy of accomplishing towing in this manner.

Just remember how many idiots have believed their sat navs above what their eyes and brains are telling them.

Then remember the "where there's blame, there's a claim" culture we live in today!!

So now having looked a little more seriously at the consequences of your actions by suggesting this totally illegal and dangerous activity. Just remember there is "one born every minuit"!!

A slutory reminder from Steve in the health and safety department.

Anyway where were we:-

Alison's husband sat in the back of a micra hatch with his knees wrapped in a puffa jacket holding a piece of bungy rope tied to a 1700kg twin axle with it's jocky wheel down on the m25 (but only for 20 miles). Not forgetting the bonfire in the gas locker to keep the gas warm.

No electric but hubby could always do hand signals with his spare hand.

Oh dear I'm crying with laughter again, Nice one Alison, or Rupert or whatever your name realy is.

Nothing wrong with a bit banter in this gloomy world we currently live in.
