Until you have broken down on a Sunday afternoon on a back road in the south of France, the cost seems very high. Take my word for it, when it happens,it's worth every penny. They where brilliant, picked up the car & caravan, took us on to our campsite, dropped of the van then took the car to Frejus to be repaired. Hired a car for me until they can repair mine, (8 days in all ) arranged and paid for a taxi to collect me and take me 20kms to hire car company. They have phoned me to keep me informed at every stage and the young French woman who is looking after my case is a delight to talk to.

That has been exactly our experience. I would never put RAC Arrival forward as the cheapest service, but I would suggest that it is the best. Cheap becomes very expensive when it does not do what you expected, and expensive becomes very cheap when it gets you out of a very worrying situation with the minimum of fuss.

Is European cover standard or do you have to pay extra?

Im with the RAC for breakdown cover, had to use them a couple of times over the years & I cant say a bad word about them.

It is extra, I am afraid. Sorry, I can't tell you how much - we have had it so long they just invoice us for the total including European cover. Not cheap, but very good if you happen to have a problem.
