I work in Peterborough and live 10 miles to the North. I first heard this story on the local radio station and fully supported the stations disgust at those that would abuse people because they're wearing an RAF uniform. Perhaps the abusers are the same sort of people that attack Fire Officers. I have to admit to some shame to be associated with Peterborough when the story first broke but very pleased when both the local authorities and listeners phoning into the radio station declared their full support for the RAF personnel.

As for nurses wearing uniforms in public: My wife was a nurse and she wouldn't wear a uniform in public because if she was asked to help someone, injured in the street, she would not be covered by liability insurance and could potentially have her registration removed.

We see many nurses still in uniform in the street, Tesco etc etc , so whilst they may have been told not to wear them out, they still do.

The only reason I can think of it then Damian is idleness on the nurses part and lax discipline on the hospital trusts part.

If they disciplined one or two and then sacked anyone if they still insisted on wearing them they would soon change their attitude. After all, it is us who suffer and as nurses, they should know better and set an example to all others in hygiene.

I've been finished work now a few years and the local nurses didn't wear their uniforms then although I do remember the days when they did. Then they were allowed to and were provided with a cape as part of the uniform issue. I'm not sure on the policy of midwives or other community nurses wearing uniform though.

Why would anyone want to wear a uniform when they can wear civvies? I would have thought armed force personel were heartily sick of uniform and glad to get back to jeans and t-shirts.

Ann, the reason, or main reason is that whereas forces housing was once entirely on base, after the MOD decided it was too expensive to keep them maintained, many forces personnel live off base, and have to travel to and from work, in uniform.

Earlier comments about returning service personnel in uniform is very easy to answer, travelling on military aircraft it is mandatory to wear uniform.

I think that the discussion is getting sidetracked. Regardless of why anyone wears uniform outside their place of duty is neither here nor there. The fact that people see fit to abuse that uniform is insulting to the race that the uniform ultimately represents... the citizens of the UK. It is bad enough if it is our own people that are the perpetrators, but if it is being carried out by foreigners ( "immigrants" in Goverment speak), then it is about time that the political correctness sham was finally put to rest and someone spoke up.

I believe I owe my freedom to these very chaps

for anyone to abuse them or to not even treat this branch of the British armed service with anything other than utter respect is in my view High Treason!

I am sure others will agree with me?

I was an RAF apprentice in the late 50's and we were not alowed to wear civies at all untill the second year of service and then only approved "muft"

I well remember incidents of abuse by local youths and one court case for assault by a gang of yobs on one poor luckless guy waiting for a bus. So nothing changes does it - I also remember that uniform was great for hitching a ride, mind you we only got 30 bob a week untill we were 17 and a half!

I think our culture is against Service folk in general - we don't particularly want to be reminded that they exist.

Contrast that with the USA, over there the military are revered and accorded full respect as are firefighters.

When I was over there last year every other car, it seemed, had a yellow ribbon decal on the back with support our troops written underneath.

Imagine if you put one on your car in Britain, probably get a brick thrown at it within 5 minutes and if not the PC brigade would report you to the police for incitement or something else hideous.
