Rail or Road?

Driving to Devon yesterdayI saw three massive low loaders carrying Northern Rail carriages and loco. What’s wrong with sending them by rail

Ask Boris, Northern rail is now a nationalised company,. nationalised by the conservatives,
You may also see London Underground rolling stock on trucks heading to Plymouth Dockyard for refurbishment. The Northern rolling stock may not be approved for use on the network on account of any defects and taking a limited number by rail is probably not cost effective given the operator has to pay to use the network. Much simpler and cheaper to use a single truck per item where the driver is paid far less than a train driver.

I worked for BR in the day, at the Laira depot in Plymouth and all the big stuff was delivered by rail (Powerplants for HST's in particular). Nothing could be more stupid than having heavy freight moving to those places by road... Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhh!!!!

Guess it all comes down to costs and the rolling stock may have faults that prohibit them going on the rail sytem.

Small world. I worked in the ICE shop in HMD Devonport Goschen Yard. There was a steady throughput of BR Deltic and Paxman engines being refurbished under contract.

As they were Northern Rail, they were probably out of order and wouldn't have been able to make the full journey by rail............

......the Northern Rail new rolling stock is being made in Spain so likely it is making the entire delivery journey by low loader using a Ro Ro ferry for the sea crossing.

Unfortunately, the rail gauge in Spain is 5' 3" as opposed to a lot of the rest of the world at 4' 8.5"
