I was preparing my van for the weekend jaunt this evening, when I was alerted by a van horn and someone shouting "hello".

I came to the open door to see a white high top van being driven by what looked like a medium built dark haired man.

He asked me whos van it was and I replied,"mine".

I was then asked if I would be prepared to sell it(its a swift 2 berth) to which I replied "No".

I did notice him eyeing up the security measures that are in place before driving off. The van was rigged for towing.Luckily,I did manage to get the registration and have notified the police.

So,if you live in the chesterfield area, please be aware and vigilant if your vans on the driveway at this moment.

Lady C,we had a similar occurrence when hitching up to go away. The proverbial white pickup stopped and a cheery voice rang out"missis we er joost block pavin up tha rowd would yer be intrested yerself?" I politely refused."How much for the lettle caravan?"I didn't want to make it known that the house would be unattended so I said the van was in for a service!!May the Good Lord forgive the lie.It is a sad state of affairs when feel so defensive.

LMH Quote"pass the popcorn"

Prey tell what do you mean ??

Caravan theft is not a subject to be taken lightly, nor is the possibility of.

Lady C must be going out of her wits with worry.

How would you feel if this had happened to you !!

It's been done to death on here over the past six years or so.

Last year and the year before, I got offered a sum of money by three men driving a white transit, all matching Lady C's description for one of my dogs. Nor me nor my dog came to any harm when I guess they could have easily jumped out their van and dragged my dog off me.

Should I have reported the offer for my dog to the police?

Thank you C,that was the point of my post.By relating my experience and alerting people in the locality, it was means to twarting these people.

After all, the van parked on my driveway cost a lot of blood, sweat and saving just like other peoples have on this forum.

If by being vigilant and alerting others to suspicious activities and a caravan is saved from being stolen, then surely that is a good thing.

Yea, thanks for that, but maybe he was actually looking for a van to buy. Just out of interest, what did the police say when you reported this?

We kept ours on the drive for a short while and it generated a bit of interest but its still safe and sound. No amount of security devices will foil the experienced thief.

Hope you have a nice time away at the weekend.

The most obvious thing for someone who wants to buy a caravan to do is to either go to a dealer who sells them or to scan classifieds or other adverts to find caravans which are advertised for sale.

As far as most of us are concerned if a complete stranger enquires at random if a caravan is for sale when it isn't advertised anywhere this would be considered unusual and worthy of comment.

From what has been written it looks as though the random enquirer may well have been a member of the travelling community so Lady C might be stereotyping the guy because he's possibly a traveller.

On the other hand she has every right to inform the police and to warn others if in her opinion she is preventing some poor caravanner from experiencing the heartbreak of having a caravan stolen and she may have been intimidated by some stranger asking at random if she'd be prepared to sell her caravan when it's never been advertised for sale.

Be that as it may, Parksy, but I get offers to sell my van quite often! and most of those are from the travelling community.

Mind you, my van is a bit special...

Hi Emmerson

When I kept my Lunar Clubman (which was nothing special) on our front drive travellers would often ask me if they could 'take the old caravan away for me' and naturally I declined their kind offers.

I've often enjoyed a bit of banter with travellers who cruise into our cul de sac now and again but of course I live in a gritty urban area and am used to dealing with travellers, scrap collectors, rag and bone men and all of the other characters which form the flotsam and jetsam of the streets in my area.

That may not be the case for the original poster of this topic who may feel that she is doing the good people of Chesterfield a good turn by submitting a post describing what may be an unusual or alarming occurrence for her.

As I posted previously, an attempt was made on my van about 3 weeks ago(or maybe a month). A cautious alert sent out by a caravanner is a good thing. At least now people in the Chesterfield will be on the alert, and if it prevents 1 theft then it's been worth while.

since most of the carvan thefts over the last few years have been committed by a group of travellers...

Its a terrible world we live in when we are suspiscious of theose who knock at our doors asking if there is anything they can buy while casually checking out if you have an alarm etc.

I live in Sheffield , about 4 miles form Chesterfield and i would like to thank the OP regarding this.

I have a traveller site very close to my hyome, and when it was opend the trouble soon started , even now at weekends the police helicopter is often having to overfly the area ..
