I've the luxury of storing my van in my drive over winter, I have just bought an adaptor to plug into my house power. If I do this will I be able to recharge the battery without taking it out of its housing ?

Hi Jeff

Connecting to the house supply is OK to keep your battery charge "topped up" in its housing. ie using built in caravan charger.

However to fully charge your battery, especially during/after a winter lay-up, you need to use a "smarter" charger with more capacity. ie higher initial voltage and current.

This higher charge can cause your battery to "gas" to some extent, and it is advisable to remove the battery, preferably into a cool dry place.(the garage for instance)

Regards

Cheers David,

I have got a car battery charger but have been advised against using this for some reason, I was trying to avoid shelling out

Jeff, I've only ever the van's own charger, and a normal every-day charger, and my leisure batteries are nine and seven years old, so it doesn't appear to have done them any harm. Keep your money in your pocket.

Jeff

I have my van plugged in all the time never had a battery problem ( touch wood) I also have a 500 watt heater on a frost stat keeps the van warm in freezing conditions also keeps it nicely aired no damp.
