Has anyone got any recommendations for cheap mobile phone call in Europe for our Summer trip to Slovenia and Croatia.

In 2009 we changed our unlocked mobiles from Virgin, our usual UK provider, to "Vodafone Passport" which gave cheaper rates. However this year I see that "Vodafone Passport" are charging a 75p connection charge on EACH and EVERY call made AND received.

Whilst Virgin are, obviously, conforming to the EU capped prices of "send a text for just 10p, make a call for just 38p a minute and receive a call for just 14p a minute, anywhere in the EU." this is still expensive and it's more from non-EU countries like Croatia

Previous to 2009 we used to buy PAYG sim cards from a provider in the main country where we were staying but as we are passing through several that would mean buying several sim cards.

We tend to use the mobiles for phoning ahead to contact book campsites, keeping in touch with our family in the UK and for contacting Red Pennant in emergencies!!

Has anyone bought one of the international type sim cards - how did you find it?

Regards

Tim

Hi Tim

I don't know a cheap method using mobiles - not sure one exists - but this year we have extensively used Skype on our laptop. We have found that wi-fi on sites has improved rapidly over the last three years and is often free or cheap.

Obviously this involves getting your contacts to set it up as well to get the full video call effect, but we have done this with family, although for older members we still make occasional mobile calls.

You can also call ordinary phone lines by setting up Skype credit, and this lasts for ages.

Overall we have been very happy with Skype this year and kept in regular touch with family and friends back home, and also friends met on camp sites, after they have moved on.

Have a great trip

Keith

We use a SIM from "One Roam", it has changed name now but I can't remember the new name. There are several different companies providing this service, a bit of Googling should find them.....try International SIM card or similar.

Ours is Estonian. Calls cost about 35p per minute to European countries. Texts about 20p. No charge to receive calls. Credit never expires even if you don't use it for ages. You can set up auto top up.
