Why are there no Englishmen or women amongst the 36 referees and 63 Assistant referees in the 2018 World Cup.
Are we that bad :woohoo:

There was to have been one but he had to pull out due to change of job and moving I think to Saudi, replacements were put forward but not accepted, first time since 38 I think that not had a ref there, we are joint top with Italy with 3 times we’ve officiated at the final, I think I’d rather have our team playing in the final than a ref though, a very enjoyable World Cup so far, nice to see the Germans out and while I would probably rate Ronaldo as one of the best players in the world his big headed attitude gave me a cause to celebrate when Portugal got knocked out.

Beehpee is correct. When FIFA announced their long list of potential officials for this World Cup, there was one UK official named, Mark Clattenburg. However, he forfeited his place when he left his job with the Premier League in February 2017 to move to Saudi Arabia. The FA attempted to replace Clattenburg but this was rejected by FIFA.

After writing this I will duck below parapets of my castle!

I hate football, well not strictly true, I hate the craziness that always seems to surround "professional" football.

Off topic, but still on the World Cup.

I was glad to see England beat Columbia tonight, Columbia's dirty tactics and shenanigans turned me completely against them.

I have to say I was very tense when it went to penalties.

We are just nursing our voice boxes!
A very close run thing. Columbia deserved at least two red cards but the American Ref had to deal with riotous players.
Well done our English boys. My flag flies high tonight :cheer:

I think that the standard of refereeing throughout has swung from very good to diabolical, I didn't think that the ref or the VAR refs were much kop last night to be honest. The whole VAR thing is has had its moments as well. Sometimes it has been used to good effect, the South Korean goal that was initially ruled off side but then given when it was shown that the ball came off a German foot was a good example. But it hasn't stopped the play acting, Neymar for example is a disgrace to the game with his theatrical cheating. The Colombian headbutt last night, how could a reviewing panel only give a yellow for a deliberate head to head assault?
Anyway I am sort of glad that Mark Cluttenburg has gone form the Premiership, I always saw him as the twelfth man on the opposing team.

Really can’t see why the ref last night put up with nearly three minutes of barracking from Columbia thus delaying the taking of the penalty. Fortunately Kane scored but after 1 minute max the ref should have told the Colombian captain anymore and the next one will be red carded. If such a thing is allowed. Or perhaps a second yellow to a player that already has one. Needed to show some gojons.

I am happy to celebrate success, but without the bawdiness and drunkenness so often depicted by the news hounds who are always ready to expose (or even manufacture) the lowest levels of depravity possible. It is my personal view that far too much emphasis is placed on football usually to the exclusion of most other forms of sport. When fandom becomes a reason (Edit excuse) for violence then basic human decency has been forgotten and debased.

Anyone seen any lager louts in Russia during this tournament?
The English fans who are out ther have paid thousands of pounds to support England’s team. They have spent money flying east to Volgograd and west to Kaliningrad, never mind their hotels.
Sorry Prof, For me your comments are more akin to the dark decades passed and have no relevance or truth to today B)

AS a rugby referee, this is what separates the two games - respect for the man in the middle (regardless of how "good" he is.

As someone once said to me, would I get sent off if I called you a blind w4nk3r?
Yes.
Can you send me off for thinking it?
No.
In that case sir, I think you're a blind w4nk3r.

Please note he still called me sir. He may have spelled it with a C, but nonetheless...
